SOUTH Wales Senior League Division One

Fochriw 1 - Sully Sports 9

Sully travelled to the depth of the Rhymney valley for this League game and found a well grassed pitch that was in need of a good cut as the ball held up in the testing conditions. It proved though to be rewarding for the Sports as they started brilliantly and were four - nil up within the first 20 minutes. Alex Long returning after injury latching on to an overlapping Taylor Harding cross to convert well.

The home team had no answer to the Sports attacks as they set up camp in the home half and Dan Lawlor converted Andrew Towsends through ball to score the second, then Harding sent a header crashing against the bar but was cleared away.

Chris Rees went clear and was tackled from behind and Alex Long hit a beauty from the spot for the third goal. The Fochriw team then produced a neat move which saw keeper Sharratt handling the ball well.

Lawlor and Rees combined well for Lawlor to bag his second and Sully’s fourth and Rees netted the fifth as the home team continued to struggle. With Lawlor and Rees again involved from a good Lamb cross as the first half came to a close Rees completed a fine hat trick.

The Fochriw team came out for the second half after a roasting from their coach but it was Alex Long who completed a hat trick after an Aiden Lewis accurate pass for number eight. By this time Fochriw had at least tested the Sully defence and did well for a while as both teams rang the changes with a far more aggressive Fochriw forcing a corner that Sharratt had to punch out, but the ball struck a Sully defender and was scrambled into the net for a consolation for Fochriw . It was only left for Mark Brown to convert McKinery’s cross with a good header.

With the game virtually over at half time Sports could not reach the standards set in the first half but a boost for the goal average and a return for the injured players.

This Saturday was due to be a free Saturday for Sports as Bruty Cup winners, who had a bye but now Sully entertain Grange Albion at Swanbridge 2pm kick off in a top of the table clash which has been brought forward by the League from the scheduled Festive fixture (December 27, where a big crowd was expected), unfortunately for Sully, manager Jimmy Blackie will be away.

Jimmy is representing Wales Veterans against England at Leicester, a game many from Sully were planning to attend to support Jimmy with a few players not available the squad will be tested.

Team against Fochriw: Sharratt, Lamb, Hopkins, Jones, Storer, Harding, Lewis, Townsend, Long, Lawlor and Rees.

Subs used: R Brown, C Mckinery, and M Brown.

In the Vale Division One Sully’s second side lost 2-0 at the Tynewydd, however Sully playing with 10 men due to many players being unavailable for a variety of reasons/excuses put on a excellent performance. This weekend they travel to Rhoose to play VI.

The Sully Ladies game didn't get to kick off as the referee was unavailable at the last minute.
