THE Vale of Glamorgan Council’s 5x60 Team hosted a basketball tournament across two days for pupils from schools across the Vale.

There were 18 teams consisting of over 150 school pupils who turned up for the three competitions, Years Seven and Eight boys, Years Seven and Eight girls, and Year Nine and 10 boys.

Teams from Barry, Stanwell, Llantwit Major, Bryn Hafren, St Richard Gwyn, Bro Morgannwg, St Cyres and Cowbridge schools all competed for a place in the regional rounds to be hosted by Rhondda Cynon Taff.

St Richard Gwyn reached the final round of all three competitions, winning the Years Nine and 10 boys’ competition against Barry Comprehensive on December 2 at Llantwit Major Leisure Centre.

But it was Cowbridge who emerged victorious at Cogan Leisure Centre two days later, winning both the girls competition and the Years Seven and Eight boys’ competition.

The 5x60 scheme aims to get secondary school pupils more active more often by encouraging them to exercise for at least 60 minutes, five days a week.

The Welsh Government funded initiative is run by Sport Wales and is supported locally by the Vale of Glamorgan Council’s Sports and Play Development Team.
