AS part of a new Vale of Glamorgan campaign to encourage more women and girls to get involved in local sports, Penarth Rowing Club is set to hold its own ‘March on Girls’ open evening for women at 6.30pm on Tuesday, March 10.

The event is free and is open to women who are looking to get fit, healthy and try their hand at a new sport in a comfortable and non-intimidating environment, which is exactly what the club offers.

Penarth Rowing Club is currently revamping its facilities and training regimes as part of a club overhaul, a crucial part of which is widening access to the sport for all local people, in particular women and girls, in order to grow the local rowing community in Penarth and the Vale of Glamorgan.

Women’s rowing continues to gain attention in the media following the London 2012 Olympic games and the successes of female role models such as Heather Stanning and Helen Glover, which is something that PRC is hoping to strengthen and build on by growing its female membership base with this latest drive to promote rowing in the area.

This initiative comes at a time when the club has just been given status as a partner on the BBC Sports Get Inspired website, the first sporting club to achieve this from Penarth and the only river or sea rowing club to do so from Wales. The open evening, starting at 6.30pm on Tuesday, March 10, will include an introduction to the club and its coaches, a tour of its newly refurbished facilities as well as a beginners’ rowing session to cover the basics of the sport.

Anybody who is interested can turn up on the night at the base of Penarth Yacht Club on the Esplanade but should contact club captain Andrew Zacharias to notify of their interest or to ask any further questions about the flagship event using the email address penarthrowingclub@gmail.com or alternatively by visiting http://www.pitchero.com/clubs/penarthrowingclub/
