ENTRIES are selling out fast for the annual Porthkerry 5 race.

The 5mile multi-terrain race, organised by Penarth and Dinas Runners, has grown massively over the last few years and is expecting its biggest starting list ever.

This year's race will have chip timing for the first time, and will also be incorporating the Welsh Short Trail Championships.

The race, taking place in and around Porthkerry Country Park, starts at 10am on Sunday, May 10.

The traffic free race is perfect for those chasing a personal best time on a challenging course, or those that fancy taking in the stunning views of one of the Vale's hidden gems.

Awards will be given to the first three male and female finishers, as well as the Male Veteran 40, 50 and 60, and Female Veteran 35, 45 and 55 age category winners.

The race is set in the scenic surroundings of Porthkerry Country Park in Barry, with race HQ in the lodge under the fabulous viaduct. There's even a chance to see the sea in the first mile.

However, don't be deceived into thinking this is an easy run, as the course has a couple of testing hills as it leaves the park heading west towards the airport, and then on the second half of the figure of eight course up through the woods on the east side of the park. But what goes up has to come down and both descents give a good chance of catching your breath or pushing on in the chase to catch fellow competitors, and with a great finish down the park towards that viaduct again.

The Forest Cafe is going to be open early on the day to welcome people who want to come along early and sign up on the day, and there are still plenty of places available.

Entry will be £9 for Welsh Athletics Registered Participants, £11 for Non-registered Participants and £12 for entries on the day (if places still available).
