PENARTH Windsor LTC held its annual LTA Open Tournament during the Easter break, attracting over 160 entries from across South Wales and further afield.

Blessed with a week of sunshine, the tournament did not disappoint, with plenty of exciting matches for spectators and a warm welcome from the club’s army of volunteers.

There was success on the courts for Windsor’s juniors too. All players gained from their experience playing in a county-level tournament, and with three home-grown finalists the strength of the club’s junior section was highlighted.

Addy Bradley Glinister came through some tough matches against opponents from Cirencester, Bristol, Newport and Gloucester to take the 10 and Under Boy title, in his first event since officially graduating to the green ball age group.

Jack Rees stormed through the rounds of the 12 and Under Boys Singles, reaching the final without dropping a single game. Facing a British representative in Ponthir’s Shay Ryan proved a step too far for Jack but he will be pleased with his performances having established himself amongst South Wales’ finest.

Playing up in the Ladies Singles event, 14-year-old Niamh Sweeney swept through the field of players from Oxford, Cardiff, Swansea and London to take the title, earning a stack of British Rankings points which will see her amongst the South Wales Top 10 in her very first event since moving to 16 and Under Tennis.

The head coach and Tournament referee was delighted with the performances of all Windsor’s players, saying “Putting on an event of this scale involves a lot of hard work from our club, but seeing all our members enjoy and learn from their competitive experience makes it all worth it. To have three finalists in Addy, Jack and Niamh is the icing on the cake and they should be proud of their performances this week”.
