PENARTH Bowling Club enjoyed a very successful spell over the past seven days, with four wins out of four.

The club emerged victorious in the season’s first WBA game and there were good wins in the Alliance Competition and in Saturday’s Friendly.

The ladies also chalked up a good victory in their only match of the week.

Tuesday last saw Captain Russell Daniel’s Alliance team set off, for Mackintosh BC, Cardiff.

On a bright sunny day with a keen wind, the team did themselves proud, with wins for Peter Small, Ron Maggs and Dave Plank negating the somewhat disappointing display by the fourth rink, (who shall be nameless… for reasons which will be patently obvious to those who know the author of this week’s report !)

The Ladies’ Team at Rectory Road were in action on Thursday last, when the visitors for a Friendly encounter were Roath Park Ladies.

In a keenly fought match it was the home team who won through with a fine win from the Tricia Brinkworth Foursome, where Tricia, ably supported by Captain Lorraine Palmer, Diana Willcocks and Sue Croll recorded a fine 22 shot victory.

Though one of the three home rinks went down, a dogged draw by Betty Jones’ rink ensured an emphatic victory for Penarth. Everyone was delighted to see Belinda Price in action once again after her recent indisposition.

Saturday saw Penarth emerge victorious in their first “WBA” match of 2015.

In very difficult weather conditions at local friends and rivals Murch, the Rectory Road men produced a very creditable 79-65 victory, despite a spirited comeback in the second half by the home side.

Ironically, the top Penarth rink was the one containing ex-Murch men Colin and Rob Grant, who, well supported by Terry Buckingham and Haydn Trow won by 23-11.

There were also successes for the Bob Wilmott and Bob Lewis rinks, with the only disappointment being a reversal for Dave Dalby’s four who, after an excellent start, succumbed to a resolute comeback from Ian Robinson.

Meanwhile, in a Friendly encounter at “HQ” Penarth recorded yet another win, this time at the expense of Llantwit Major. Top honours went to the trio of Peter Small, Brian Hocking and the evergreen Don Butler. With Mike Conway and Ron Maggs also well up, the excellent progress under captain Mike England continues.

“Captain Phil and his intrepid team-mates” were somewhat perplexed to read in last week’s “Times” that they had apparently defected to the Murch Bowling Club. I can reveal that there is no truth whatsoever in this report and it was due to a “Senior moment” on the part of “Correspondent Nick”, who, since the appearance of last week’s paper, is reported to have headed for the Central African Republic, where he is said to be in hiding in a remote cave, disguised as a Fruit Bat, fearing, no doubt, not only the reaction of the Rectory Road membership, but also the possible response from that other local scribe, “The Venerable Edwin Of Windsor” who, it is feared, will have a field day with this aberration.
