THE past seven days has proved to be a period of mixed fortunes for Penarth Bowling Club, with convincing victories in the Munro Cup and Alliance but a substantial reversal in the PG2.

The Ladies also had a mixed bag with one win and one defeat.

Bob Willmott, Joe Ellis, Dave Ingram and Elvin John were the star performers in the 55-50 win over Whitchurch Hospital, with a good win from Dave Plank ensuring the winning margin.

Barry Romilly had already inflicted two defeats on Penarth this season in the Alliance and in an early season friendly, but the Rectory Road men saw off the threat of a hat-trick with two rinks up and two tied in a 16-shot winning margin. The top rink on this occasion was headed by Colin Grant in the company of Haydn Trow, Rob Grant and Mike Conway.

A good win for Clive Fry and hard fought ties for Brian Brennan and Nick Chandler set the seal on a fine performance, though it has been suggested that Nick’s outrageous shot on the last end which gained the draw, might have something to do with the “dark arts” picked up from the local witch doctor on his recent foreign excursion. This extraordinary shot has now been dubbed “Nicks Whick!”.

Penarth’s recent good run in the PG2 came to a juddering halt against Ystradfechan on Saturday. Despite a win for Peter Small in company with Brian Hocking, Nick Chandler and Paul Church and a narrow reversal for Bob Willmott, the Rectory Road men slid to a 62-87 loss.

The ladies had a good win in Wednesday’s Double Rinker against Millwood where a solid performance from Val Letton, Lorraine Palmer, Viv Duckers and Norma Duggan sealed the win by 36-31.

However, the windy conditions up in the heights of Cadoxton on Thursday did not entirely suit the team where two rinks went down and, despite a success for the Betty Jones Four, featuring Kath Jenkins, Pat Reynolds and Norma Duggan, the end result was a narrow six-shot loss.

Members were deeply saddened to hear of the death of Mal Ireson, last week. Mal was, for many years, a dedicated, hard-working and very popular member at Rectory Road. Our deepest sympathies go to Vilma and family.
