ON A sunny day both runners and families having a day out are a common sight in Cosmeston Country Park and on Sunday, June 7, the two groups combined for a morning of running and fundraising.

The first ‘All Soles’ family fun run, organised by running club, Women Running Penarth, saw more than 100 adults and children taking part in either a 2k or 5k run around the park, raising more than £500 for Breakthrough Breast Cancer.

The run has been an annual part of the club’s calendar for several years but this was the first time that it has been opened up to friends, family and members of the public, including children and male runners.

Thanks to sponsorship from businesses, Bar 44 and Infographics Ltd, the club were able to make this year’s run an exciting new community event.

Owen Morgan, co-founder of Bar 44, said, “It’s great that so many turned up to participate in the ‘All Soles’ run. As a Penarth-based restaurant, we feel it is very important to support local community initiatives and we look forward to seeing the runners coming into the restaurant to benefit from their 10 per cent discount.”

Luckily, the notorious Welsh weather was kind on the day and the event proved to be a great success which the whole family could enjoy.

Younger children ran the 2k course with an adult but lots of the kids were so fast they left their parents struggling to keep up.

First place in the children’s run went to nine-year-old Harry Davies who completed it in eight minutes and 59 seconds.

The overall winners in the 5k adults run were Richard Ashton (23:57) and Vicky Gee (26:18). Finishing times didn’t really seem to matter though; there were smiles all round from adults and children alike when they received their well earned medals.

Following this year’s success, the club hope to make this an annual event and attract even more families to take part next year.
