GOLFERS from across Glamorganshire and Dinas Powys golf clubs made the annual pilgrimage to Mountain Ash recently to raise money for charity.

And on an unusually hot Thursday in June, there was one team that stood out above all else.

Cardiff Orthodontics, consisting of Dinas Powys golfers Paul Evans, Mike Perrin, Martyn Swensson and Phil Rawsthorne, landed top prize at the 2015 Multiple Sclerosis Golf Charity Day.

After a challenging but enjoyable 18 holes in the glorious Cynon Valley, the Orthodontics were named Team Winners with 121 stableford points, from Hyder on 117 points.

The Orthodontics were also named Magic Ball Winners with 38 points, knocking the three men of Pink Pig (35 points) into second.

The day’s Individual Winner was Swensson, also of the Orthodontics, who scooped 40 points.

Team Darkie, a Penarth-based group made up of Ged Donovan, Peter Wilson, Alan Hyett and Arwyn Williams, scooped the prize for Best Score on the Par 3s, with a 34-point haul.

Huw Martinson, of Pink Pig, was rewarded for being Nearest the Pin, while Alan Godwin, of Jammy’s Reds, won a prize for his Longest Drive.

Overall, 20 teams took part in what is the UK’s premier MS charity golf day, and stunning views of neighbouring towns and villages eased what proved a difficult round for many.

Penarth and Dinas Powys were, as always, very well represented and competition was again played out in the impeccable spirit associated with this permanent fixture on the local golfing calendar.

Event leader Roger Evans said: “This year’s MS Golf Charity Day was another great success with 20 teams turning out in support.

“More importantly, we raised £3,100 to take our overall tally for the MS Society to £33,000 over 14 years and I am grateful to all participants for their continued commitment to the cause.”
