THE Windsor Bowls Club’s week began with an ‘Alliance’ league game against Penarth Rectory Road.

With 32 senior citizens in their bowling prime a most exciting game ensued. Victory eventually went to their good friends by 71 shots to 51. For Windsor, only former publican Michael Fullbrook and his rink provided a lone win.

On the same day, the ladies, under captain Veronica Flitney, received a walk-over against Barry Millwood. The following day they defeated Dinas Powys, ‘Murch’, thanks to some brilliant bowling by A Hudson; B Roberts; V Flitney and Di Thomas, who in winning 21 shots to 10, clinched seven points.

The men in the Munro Cup game against Barry ‘Millwood’ collected 12 points as three of the four Windsor rinks were victorious.

Against ‘The Murch’ on Thursday, the ladies were once again in fine form and collected eight points in a 17 shot win.

Rink scores: C Lewis; J Davies; D Roper and K Dyer - 19-11

M Morgan; A Morrish; L White and M Owen - 18-21

A Hudson; B Roberts; V Flitney and D Thomas - 18-6

In the ‘Alan Martin’ first round two rink men’s competition, the Windsor team won a somewhat facile victory over Rhoose by 56 shots to 19.

A sunlit Saturday brought a day full of hope for the Windsor’s PG1 team, as they played in the ‘Carruthers Shield’ against Skewen of Swansea.

Both teams sensed it could be a close and thrilling game. The fact that neither team had given any thought to the speed of Windsor greens took away most of their hopes.

The standard of bowls that ensued from both teams was far below what was expected. The final score of 84 to Skewen and 75 to Windsor was a bitter pill to swallow, especially as the home side possess one of the newest and most expensive watering systems in Wales.

That said, mention must be made of A Morgan; C Burton; P Gunter and skip Tony Holmes who provided Windsor’s only winning rinks. As the Windsor selectors provide 25 per cent of the team, it is to be hoped that a knee-jerk reaction does not occur and the remaining 12 jettisoned.

The PG2 team, somewhat decimated, travelled overnight to Merthyr Dowlais and a not unexpected defeat ensued. Despite the superhuman efforts of captain Alun Daniel and those that travelled and supported him, a defeat by 44 shots to 108 says it all.

The club scribe and bar manager, when locking and securing the club on the midnight hour was amazed to see the spectre of club and PG1 captain returning. When challenged, Brian Rogers produced a ‘crystal ball’ and said a darkened room was needed to allow him to get his head together re the future section.
