RECRUITING girls into sport can be a challenge but at Glamorganshire Golf they have set up a New 2 Golf scheme with funding support from Golf Development Wales with tremendous success.
Lady captain, Alison Smith said, "We were concerned that the number of girls playing golf was beginning to drop off at the club and in the game generally. With the support of partners and coaches at the Vale Golf Academy we now have a thriving winter coaching programme."
Previous junior girl’s champions, Megan Blunsden and Emma Greenslade have volunteered to be the junior golf ambassadors’ and are already planning a packed summer of activities and competitions for the girls when the weather improves.
PGA professional Matthew Coombs said "These are a great group of girls, lots of talent and enthusiasm for the game, they're fun to coach and noisier than the boys. It's great to see so many girls taking up the game and huge credit should go the Glamorganshire Golf Club for being so proactive in encouraging girls in to sport".
The club will be running further coaching programmes for girls, so if you are interested or know someone who would like to try the game and join the girls section please contact Steve Morris, junior organiser on 02920 701185.
