DURING January Penarth Bridge Club played their Club Pair Championships, starting on Friday 15 with the Handicap Pairs Championship.

The championship was won by Carol Cochlin and Phillip Botrill, but that was round one.

On Friday 22, the final night, members watched the 10 best pairs from the previous night of championship - January 15 - playing for the Pairs Championship (the Rose Bowl Trophy).

Peter Millar and Trish Tracey won Round 2 of the competition, but when the results from Round 1 were taken into account, the event was found to be tied between the Round 2 winners and the leaders last week Tony Ratcliff and Patrick Jourdain.

It’s the first time that anyone at Penarth Bridge Club can remember a tie in the event.

The final results were:

Joint first Tony Ratcliff and Patrick Jourdain - 194

Joint first Peter Millar and Trish Tracy - 194

Third Eric Favager and Mike Downey - 172

Fourth Rod and Angela Hudson - 171

Fifth Joan Jenkins and Mike Best - 168

Sixth Adrian and Diana Trickey - 164

Seventh Pat Sullivan and Hugh Simmonds - 160

Eighth Tony Campbell and Brian Hardey - 150

Ninth Joy Secular and Anne Johns - 140

Tenth Phillip Bottril and Carol Cochlin - 123

Members who failed to qualify for the big event played for a big prize in the adjoining room at the Kymin. The winners were Meryl Skipper and Jim Elder who each take away a big bottle of wine.
