PENARTH Bowling Club have continued their very successful post-Christmas run with two further victories in the matches played against Penarth Windsor/Belle Vue and Pentyrch.

On January 13, the hosts had much pleasure in welcoming a combined Penarth Windsor/Belle Vue team to Rectory Road. In a very hard fought contest which belied the scoreline, Penarth Bowling Club emerged victorious despite some spirited bowling from the visitors.

Bob Lewis’ rink was pushed all the way by Belle Vue’s Brian Morgan and only emerged victors by two shots, courtesy of a three on the very last end.

Meanwhile Mike Matthews, an indoor member at Penarth BC gave Ron Maggs’ rink a stern test before succumbing by just five shots. Hard as they tried, the other two visiting rinks did not fare quite so well with “Whispering" Dave Clements aided by Don Butler and Tony and Guy Thomas turning in the best performance (27-7) and this was almost matched by Dave Dalby’s rink which included Dave Ingram, Phil Davies and Mike England.

In Bob Hill’s absence the all-important catering duties were undertaken by Alan and Ron. Mercifully, there were no subsequent reports of any intestinal irregularities in the ensuing days.

On Wednesday, January 20 the opposition was provided by Pentyrch and, once again the home side’s familiarity with the Rectory Road carpet proved to be decisive, despite the best efforts of the visitors.

Dave Dalby, accompanied by Mike England, Phil Davies and Dave Ingram won through 27-8, closely followed by Ron Maggs, on this occasion teamed up with Alan Stockham, Russell Daniel and Ron Birkby.

Bob Hill, newly returned from warmer climes, and happily restored to catering duties, won through well, leaving Dave Clements - yet again - to qualify for the “Venerable Order Of The Marigold Gloves” and the accompanying “honour” of doing the post-match washing up.

On Saturday, January 23, 60 or so members assembled at the club for a very enjoyable Race Night organised by the Penarth Bowling Club’s excellent entertainments committee. Everyone enjoyed a particularly successful evening, so well done to all the organisers for another truly great effort.
