PENARTH Bowling Club’s successful winter campaign continued over the last fortnight with three convincing victories.

Wins over Rhiwbina and Llantwit Major in the two men's fixtures were augmented with a great performance against the Welsh Short Greens in the weekend mixed game.

Penarth were never really troubled in the match against Rhiwbina on January 27. Although the visitors did gain success on two of the four rinks the winning margins on the two successful rinks were more than adequate to compensate.

Some shrewd selection by captain, Alan Stockham, whose foursome also included Dave Ingram, Russell Daniel and skip Ron Maggs led to a winning margin of no less than 20 shots.

Whilst Bob Hill, a consummate performer at Rectory Road also won well with the help of Nick Thomas, Phil Davies and Nick’s little brother, Tony Thomas. One of the two successful visiting rinks had an all too familiar look about them, but there was no mystery here as Peter Needham, Berwyn Lansley and Derrick Musk with Dave Clements had been roped in to help out the visitors, and did so in fine style.

On Sunday, January 31 the popular visitors for the weekend mixed match were the Welsh Short Greens. For the uninitiated, this somewhat strange title refers not to the fact that they are engaged in the cultivation of small varieties of vegetables but to the fact that they play the short mat version of the game in the winter months.

Despite some good bowling from the opposition, Penarth were totally dominant in this one and ran out victors on all four rinks.

Once again, captain Alan Stockham’s shrewd selection policy ensured that he was on the top rink and aided by Lynda Jones, and Joan and Bob Lewis, he was able to bask in a 27-8 win.

Also very successful was the Betty Jones rink, where Betty, in company with Sandra Whitfield, Mike England and Don Butler notched up a very favourable scoreline.

Reg Jones and Dave Plank also ended up winning to set the seal on a fine performance. Special thanks to Sandra Whitfield and Dave Rogan who stepped in as last minute substitutes for this one.

Llantwit Major were the visitors on Wednesday, February 3, once again, the Penarth side were in uncompromising mood as they swept to a substantial win with success on three rinks out of the four.

Bob Hill continued his recent fine form with a thumping 28-6 win aided by Bob Willmott, Phil Davies and Trevor Jenkins.

Captain Alan Stockham was, yet again, part of a successful quartet and in company with Ron Birkby, Russell Daniel and the ever consistent Ron Maggs, played a vital role in the rink’s 15 shot win.

With Dave Dalby’s four also enjoying a very good evening the only minor blemish was a reversal for Bob Lewis.

Members are now seriously considering whether Bob is making a serious assault on Dave Clement’s monopoly of the washing up duties - only time will tell.
