FINALLY Penarth Under-16s returned to rugby action on the weekend as dry conditions meant that their match was on.

After the rain had finally given way to dry weather, Penarth Under-16s gratefully accepted the invitation of former Blues Cup winners Abercynon. Reflecting the commitments of Blues development, both teams played 14-a-side which created space and running rugby. Perhaps a solution to Friday night’s drudge.

Abercynon as predicted moving the ball away from rucks and the Penarth defence ignoring their coaches warning failed to spread the defence quickly and were rightly punished with two tries within 10 minutes.

The home centres both enjoying quick ball and with great support lines played simple passes to draw and feed the overlapping full back to go over. Their second try displayed the same simplicity adding a cut back inside to tap down under the posts.

Abercynon superior fitness created dominance at the breakdown and the pressure yielded two more tries interrupted by the first consistent possession from Penarth with Morgan’s swerve down the middle and cool finish.

Half-time and the same unheeded message was repeated to the boys. Greater possession for Penarth as they returned to the field but when you are second to the breakdown this means you finish behind and three further tries for Abercynon from turnovers to Penarth’s one - from a rare turnover by the visitors - reflected the second half.

Equally skilled teams but quicker, faster and sustained support through fitness levels gave the stage and the rewards to the home team. An exceptional game by Hugh marked by his try out wide from flanker to winger in the same move.
