THE competition season at Dinas Powis Golf Club has started and despite the vandalism that has incapacitated the seventh hole some excellent scores have been achieved.

The Hird trophy was contested a fortnight ago and the winner was Martin Brennan (handicap 13) with a magnificent 44 points. Just about everything went right for him and left others floundering.

Phil Sutton (handicap 12) was his nearest challenger with a commendable 39 points.

Last Saturday saw the Spring Tankard and FA Green qualifier take place. This stroke play round produced many consistent rounds in the true test of golf .

Winner was Howard Bellis (handicap 14) with a brilliant net 56. Second was Simon Collins (handicap 17) with a net 58 and third was Jeff Bailey with a net 59.

Collins, the Three Horse Shoes icon stroked the ball majestically and was unlucky not to have triumphed.

The club has undergone extensive refurbishment over the winter and is now available for various functions. Call the office on 02920 512727.

Gareth Dommett, the new caterer, has also proved a big hit with his regular Wednesday night curries and Sunday carveries.
