WARREN Gatland labelled Newport Gwent Dragons wing Hallam Amos' Twickenham display as a "mixed bag" but is excited by his attacking talent ahead of Wales' daunting dates with the world champions.

Wales head to New Zealand for three Tests on the back of a deflating performance in their 27-13 defeat to England on Sunday.

They shipped five tries to the Six Nations champions so will face plenty of defensive drills from coach Shaun Edwards ahead of their meetings with the most potent attacking force in the game.

On a pretty grim afternoon in the London sun, one positive came in the shape of 21-year-old Amos who went on the run 13 times, made 118 metres with ball in hand, made two clear breaks and beat five defenders.

In one memorable first half break he bumped off lock Courtney Lawes before showing pace to break clear and then composure to pass on to Jamie Roberts only for Rhys Webb to go down a blind alley.

In the closing stages he enjoyed another burst only for England full-back Mike Brown to defend well and for the attack to fizzle out when Rhys Priestland couldn't gather Amos' pass.

The Dragons man does, like his teammates, have some work to do in defence after failing to halt Ben Youngs' momentum for try number three and then getting too narrow for the final score of the game through Marland Yarde.

However, Amos looks to be in pole position to start against the All Blacks ahead of wing rivals Tom James and Eli Walker or Gareth Anscombe, who is an option at full-back with Liam Williams moving out wide.

"There were some real positives and some negatives as well (from Amos), so it was a mixed bag," said the New Zealander. "I thought some of his attacking stuff and his footwork was great.

"Mike Brown in that last break showed experience and Hallam (would like to be) given that moment again, in terms of working the ball and changing an angle. He put himself in a try-scoring situation and didn't do that.

"There were some nice touches in attack and defensively a few things to work on, while there were moments in the game that we need to keep working on and be accurate to finish chances.

"Like the break he made in the first half when for some reason Rhys Webb decided to come left on a one-on-four with Scott Baldwin – not the best decision in the world!"

If Amos gets the nod then he will be up against a formidable All Blacks back three.

Last week Steve Hansen named Julian Savea, Ben Smith, Waisake Naholo, Israel Dagg and exciting Chiefs uncapped prospect Damian McKenzie as his finishers.

Nehe Milner-Skudder is currently sidelined by a shoulder injury.
