RHYS Patchell is confident that he can get into the swing of things with Wales in Wellington after being handed a shock call-up to the XV to face the All Blacks.

The 23-year-old will start at full-back against New Zealand in the second Test at ‘The Cake Tin’ just a week after being called-up to the tour.

Patchell, who will join the Scarlets from Cardiff Blues next season, had been set for a golfing holiday in north Wales when he received the call-up following George North’s hamstring injury in the 39-21 loss to the world champions.

He landed in New Zealand on Monday, came off the bench in the 40-7 loss to the Chiefs on Tuesday and then in the early hours of Thursday morning was named in Warren Gatland’s starting Test line-up.

"I've been asked to do a job on the weekend and hopefully I'll be able to do it," said Patchell, whose inclusion sees Liam Williams move to the wing.

"It's been a bit of a whirlwind few days, but I'm looking forward to the challenge on the weekend.

"It's a really exciting thing to look forward to and I'm sure Saturday night will be bouncing and it will be a great atmosphere to play in front of."

Patchell won two caps on the tour to Japan in 2013 and trained with Gatland’s squad both at the World Cup and before last month’s date with England.

But the leap from potential Test regular of the future to being 15 opposite the vastly experienced Israel Dagg caught many by surprise, including the man himself.

"This Saturday, I wasn't meant to be doing much, probably just watching the game," he said.

"I was actually driving to north Wales with my housemates when I got a phone call telling me I'd probably be required, but thought that I'd be flying on Sunday.

"And then I got a phone call when we were on the first tee at the golf club, saying can you leave the boys in north Wales.

"So I left my two housemates stranded on the first tee, jumped in the car and drove back to Cardiff."

"I'm very, very fortunate that it's come around again," he continued. "Injuries put me out of a couple of them and with form and selection I didn't quite become a consistent member of the squad as I hoped I would. It's a great opportunity to be back in the squad."

A classy footballer, the 23-year-old is another kicking option and should add threat when coming in as another first receiver.

He is preferred to wings Tom James or Eli Walker and Gareth Anscombe, who played 15 against South Africa in the World Cup quarter-final and replaced Williams last weekend only to suffer a minor thigh injury.

"He was potentially unlucky not to be on the tour in the first place and we watched him play 15 for the Blues on a number of occasions and we've been impressed with him," said Gatland.

"He's quick, he's got a big boot on him and we think he can do a job for us. He brings a physical element, he's an intelligent rugby player and he's pretty excited about the opportunity."

The only other change to the squad sees Luke Charteris get the nod alongside Alun Wyn Jones at lock with Bradley Davies dropping to the bench.

Dragons wing Hallam Amos completes the back three to win his ninth cap in Wellington, the 21-year-old getting another opportunity after a mixed performance in the 39-21 loss at Eden Park in which he had some bright moments in attack but some iffy ones in defence.
