PENARTH athlete Brett Morse has won a silver medal at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham at the 2016 UK Championships and Olympic Trials.

Despite his achievement, Morse, coached by Nigel Bevan, must now try to secure two Olympic qualification standards over the next fortnight to make his selection a formality.

Along with Morse, Welsh athlete Seren Bundy-Davies, coached by Stephen Ball, earned an automatic selection to Team GB for the Rio Olympics as a result of placing second in the women’s 400m.

She held multiple qualification times, so placing in the top two was all that was required, and she delivered in great style.

Bethan Davies, coach Andi Drake, won the women’s 5k race walk by virtue of a personal best performance of 22.03 to go one better than her silver medal from 2015 and secure a national title for Wales.

There were silver medals for Sally Peake, coach Scott Simpson, in the pole vault and like Penarth’s Brett Morse must secure two Olympic qualification standards in two weeks to be selected.

Rhys Williams, coach Adrian Thomas, won bronze in a dramatic 400m hurdles final. Rhys holds an Olympic qualification standard from earlier this season, so must now attempt to improve his season’s best in order to convince the selectors that he is worthy of a discretionary selection.

There were three further bronze medals from Welsh athletes – all in the throwing events – with Adele Nicoll, coaches Vladmir Zinchenko and Adrian Palmer, winning her first UK senior outdoor medal in the shot, Carys Parry, coach Adrian Palmer, in the hammer and Gareth Winter, coach Zane Duquemin, in the shot.

David Omoregie, coach Benke Blomkvist, narrowly missed out on a medal in the 110m hurdles, placing fourth, having run a season’s best of 13.58 in the heats.

There was disappointment for Dai Greene, coach Benke Blomkvist, who was unable to make the final of the 400m hurdles, as he struggled to maintain his health in the run-in to the Championships.

However, there was huge success for Aled Davies, coach Ryan Spencer Jones, who once again broke his personal best in the F42 shot put, setting a new world record of 16.38m.
