PENARTH Bowling Club's results over the past week produced something of a mixed bag, with disappointment in the Munro Cup and Alliance matches more than compensated for by success in the Private Greens games and a great week for the ladies.

The week got off to a rain drenched start for a mixed friendly at Panteg House on Sunday. Despite the warm welcome from the hosts the friendship did not extend to proceedings on the green where Penarth definitely came off second best.

The real winner in this one was the appalling weather and it would be less than kind to go into the details of the scores on a day where the players had a better chance of holding an eel soaked in WD40 than holding a bowl.

The trip to the artificial surface at Rhoose on Wednesday proved too stern a test for the Rectory Road outfit who largely struggled to cope with the stark contrast to playing on grass. Three rinks went down on this occasion with Russell Daniel, Dick Edwards, Derrick Musk and skip, Bob Willmott doing well to tie 19 - all, and Mike Conway, Don Shirley, Bob Horne and Nick Chandler doing well to lose by only two shots in a 63 - 79 reversal.

The Alliance team travelled to Sophia Gardens on Tuesday where they came off second best to the hosts, Cardiff BC.

The bright spots here were a single shot win for George Mackie, Gareth Evans, Ken Brinkworth and skip, Colin Hicks and a mere one shot loss for Ron Maggs in company with Dave Holdaway, Brian Fisher and Peter Needham.

There was a much closer encounter on Thursday when captain Brian took his troops to Penarth Windsor where a close-fought match ensued, with the outcome in the balance to the end. In the final analysis, Windsor won by just one shot overall in what everyone agreed was a thoroughly enjoyable and engaging game.

The PG 1 match on Saturday saw a further step in the right direction with a 71 - 57 win over Mackintosh BC and a valuable 12 points. Top dogs for Penarth were the Nick Thomas rink where Nick consummately backed up by Alan Stockham, John Whitfield and Phil Davies triumphed 22 - 9.

Nick Chandler, Bob Horne, Don Shirley and Mike Conway won 18 - 16 whilst Tony Thomas, Paul Church, Dave Plank and skip, Dave Dalby were 17 - 15 up.

There was a second visit to Sophia Gardens this week where Penarth travelled for a PG 2 match. This proved to be an enthralling affair with some excellent bowling and the scores on a knife edge throughout.

At the close, the scores were locked at 81 each, which was probably a fair result. The two winning rinks were provided by Brian Knight, John Bowen, Guy Thomas and Roger Gidman 25 - 20 and Trevor Jenkins, Lewis Evans, Brian Hocking and Skip Brian Brennan who fought back spiritedly to win 22 - 19. The other two rinks dug in well to lose only narrowly and so Penarth retain their unbeaten PG 2 record.

Penarth ladies, meanwhile, have struck a truly rich vein of form lately and this continued with three victories last week. Such was their dominance in Tuesday’s Double Rink match that they emerged victorious by no less than 38 shots.

The rink of Chris Church, Jill Gaskell, Diana Willcocks and captain Sue Croll were in dominant mood as they chalked up a 35 - 4 win and with Viv Duckers, June Williams, Lynda Williams and Maureen Dalby winning 16 - 9 further progress was assured in this league.

Penarth were also well on top against Roath Park in Tuesday’s Evening League game where both rinks dominated proceedings. Betty Jones, with Belinda Price, Maureen Dalby and Chris Davies won handsomely by 27 - 8 and Tricia Brinkworth, Kath Jenkins, Wendy Grant and Jayne Edwards weighed in with a 23 - 13 success.

On Thursday Penarth welcomed good friends from Penarth Windsor for an afternoon league game. As expected the opposition proved a much sterner test this time but, thanks to a fine 24 - 9 success for Norma Duggan, Diana Willcocks, Wendy Grant and skip, Joyce Allen and a hard fought single shot win by Kath Jenkins, Mary Bowen, Betty Jones and Belinda Price a 14 shot win resulted overall.
