IN A successful seven days, Penarth Bowling Club won five of their six matches.

The highlight of the week was in the PG2 as the club won against Rhiwbina taking them to the top of the table.

Penarth ladies returned to top form in Tuesday’s visit to Penylan in the Evening League. A solid performance from Chris Church, Jayne Edwards, Maureen Dalby and skip Belinda Price (15-9) led the way and a spirited fightback from the Tricia Brinkworth four, who only lost out by a single shot, ensured a well earned victory.

This good form continued in the match against Murch on Thursday with wins for Chris Church, Jill Gaskell, Sue Croll and Tricia Brinkworth (23-7) and skip Belinda Price, with Norma Duggan, Lynda Williams and Wendy Grant (17-16) ensuring success by 56-47 overall.

The men's Alliance fixture on Tuesday, July 19, at Penylan was played on the hottest day of the year so far but acting captain, Neil Gaskell was well pleased with the performance which produced a 73-61 win with three rinks up.

Top honours went to Ken Lloyd, Phil Davidge, Reg Jones and skip Dave Plank (22-12), closely followed by Bob Willmott, with George Mackie, Dave Ingram and Peter Small(20-14). A win for Haydn Trow (18-16) finished another successful fixture.

For Wednesday’s Munro Cup encounter, Penarth found the heavy green at Barry Central something of a challenge but adapted well to the conditions to win well and take 11 useful points in the process.

Dave Dalby was the visitors most successful skip (21-10) and, in company with Nick Thomas, Phil Davidge and the ever dependable Jack Beanland, showed the way. An impressive 18-16 win for Terry Buckingham, Derrick Musk, Guy Thomas and skip Bob Hill(18-16) and a battling display from Nick Chandler (17-17) sealed the win in the end.

The most impressive outing of the week was undoubtedly a fine 89-61 victory for the PG2 side at Rhiwbina.

Nick Thomas, with fine support from Dick Edwards, Brian Hocking and captain Russell Daniel excelled with a 23-11 win.

The three other rinks of Bob “Galloping Gourmet” Hill with Peter Small, Brian Knight and John Whitfield (23-15); Berwyn Lansley, Alan Stockham, Colin Hicks and skip Haydn Trow (24-17) and Trevor Jenkins, Lewis Evans, Dave Hilldrup and Brian Brennan (19-18) were all in fine form, giving Penarth maximum points and securing their spot at the top of the division.

The only losing match was in the PG1 at home to Rhiwbina. Things were very tight until the latter stages when the Rectory Road side’s challenge faded somewhat and the match ended in an eight shot reversal despite a competent performance from the one successful Penarth rink comprising Mike Conway, Don Shirley, Bob Horne and skip Nick Chandler who produced a worthy 27-12 victory.
