DINAS Powys Cricket Club's first team headed to league leaders Crumlin on Saturday and succumbed to the top team.

The Dinas Villagers lost the toss and were put into bat first.

Dinas were soon in trouble, as their previous century hitter Gordon Hannah, chipped in with just 10.

Jeff Mitchell and Matt Todd-Bennett soon followed Hannah and the Villagers found themselves in trouble at 32-3.

Wickets continued to tumble with only Joe Beames (23) and skipper Lewis Clarke (21) getting into the 20s.

Dinas lost their last wicket after getting to a paltry 130 inside 37 overs, failing the golden rule of batting out their 45 overs.

Crumlin made short work of the target and victory was secured inside 24 overs with seven wickets remaining.

A debut wicket first team scalp for Jack Houghton, who was bowling with some good left arm pace, edged Crumlin's best batsman Simon Veall for three.

Despite the loss by Dinas, the team noted some dubious umpiring decisions for both teams, with three LBW's and a bizarre run out where it appeared the batsman had ran past the stumps.

This week the team take on Whitchurch Heath at Bryn y Don at 1pm, where a win for the Villagers will keep their chances of promotion alive.

The 2nd XI game against Barry Town was called off due to a family bereavement within the Barry club, and the thoughts of all at Dinas Powys CC are with those affected. The team will be away to Whitchurch Heath on Saturday, July 30.

The 3rd XI game against Christchurch was also not played as the opposition conceded during the week. The 3rds face Brynmawr 2nds on the weekend.

The new player loan system introduced by the league this year allowed a couple of Dinas players to get a game in with Barry Wanderers, who found themselves short of players. This is a good initiative to ensure that cricket is played, even when clubs are short of players.
