AN ICE hockey team representing a Penarth hospice will compete in the biggest charity ice hockey tournament in the UK.

Representing Ty Hafan, the team will face off against seven other teams, when the event heads to Cardiff on Saturday, July 30 and Sunday, July 31.

The UK Forums All Stars sees eight teams competing over two days of games, with each team representing, and raising money for, one of eight charities.

Along with Ty Hafan, the seven charities being supported are Wales Air Ambulance, Breast Cancer Care Cymru, Dreams Come True, Blue Cross for Pets, Help for Heroes, British Heart Foundation and Prostate Cancer UK.

The event will see in excess of 136 players travelling to Cardiff from all over the UK and even some from further afield destinations, like Dubai. Teams are made up of players of all levels of ability and the games are played with the emphasis on fun.

Having taken place in rinks around the UK over the years, this will be the first time the All Stars will be icing at the new twin ice pad facility at Ice Arena Wales, as the last time the UK Forums All Stars were in Cardiff, it was played at the old rink, affectionately referred to as the ‘Big Blue Tent’.

Last year’s event was held in Sheffield, where the total amount raised for the charities supported was £86,000 by the end of the weekend.

With just a few days to go, before the Friday night’s official launch night at Ice Arena Wales, the players competing in this year’s event have already surpassed this total - currently in access of £87,500 raised - and are continuing to fundraise, with an aspirational target of £100,000.

The Ty Hafan team have already raised more than £20,000 after setting an original target of £11,000 on their JustGiving page.

There will be plenty of sporting action on the ice and charity stalls, raffle draws and prizes throughout the weekend.

Matches are being played throughout the day on Saturday from noon to 7pm and on Sunday from noon to 8pm. Adult day passes are just £3, with a pass for the whole weekend costing £5. Under-16’s enter for a charitable donation.
