SULLY Centurions Cricket Club welcomed Ponthir to the club on Saturday, July 30, but were left disappointed after losing a game they could have won.

The visitors won the toss and asked Sully to bat first. After losing the first wicket for 11, the second wicket partnership of 56 between Pavel and Sandeep gave Centurions hope of a decent score.

However, wickets began to fall regularly – with several batsmen making starts but failing to kick on. Three run outs didn’t help the cause, as the innings finished on just 141 in the 34th over.

Dennehy, with 3 for 19 was the pick of the visiting attack.

When Ponthir batted, the top four batsmen all made solid contributions without looking in any trouble. In the end they took only 31 overs to reach the target, with Harrison top scoring on 36 not out.

The wickets were shared around, but this was definitely a missed opportunity for Sully.

After the euphoria of recent weeks it was back to earth with a bump for Centurions, who remain rooted to the bottom of the table.

The 2nd XI travelled to Ponthir for the reverse fixture and, after bowling the home side out, blew their chances of victory with a below par batting performance.

It was a family affair for Sully, as Jason Hicks grabbed four wickets and son Gethin took three, adding a catch off Jason’s bowling and a direct hit for a run out as the hosts were all out for 143.

However, with a few dropped catches, it could have been an even lower total.

In reply the Centurions’ batsmen just couldn’t get going as a mixture of poor shot selection and accurate bowling, backed up with good work in the field, led to the innings ending on a disappointing 104 all out.

Gethin Hicks, with 28, was the top scorer for Sully.
