PENARTH Bowling Club weekly highlights included another victory in the PG2 along with double success in the Alliance and the ladies were also celebrating following a win in the Evening League.

Firstly the ladies travelled to Barry Central on Tuesday, July 26, and found their heavy green to be a real challenge compared to the fast surface at Penarth.

Consequently, they struggled to make a real impact, though captain Sue Croll, with Chris Davies, Sandra Roberts and Lorraine Palmer did well to finish a mere two shots down in an 18 - 50 scoreline in this Double Rink match.

Things were much better for the Evening league fixture on Thursday, July 28 with both rinks up in a tight encounter with Rumney Gardens. Tricia Brinkworth aided by Chris Church, Jill Gaskell and Joyce Allen (20 - 17) and Chris Davies, Lorraine Palmer, Kath Jenkins and skip Belinda Price (16 - 15) saw Penarth safely through.

It was a successful week in the Alliance for the men as well with wins over St Fagans and St Josephs. In the former, wins for Russell Daniel, Brian Knight, Lewis Evans and Tony Thomas (24 - 10), Neil Gaskell, Claudio Gent, Reg Jones and Colin Hicks (16 - 7) and a virtuoso performance from Dave Holdaway, Brian Fisher, Dave Hilldrup and skip Berwyn Lansley (25 - 9) rounded off the proceedings nicely.

Things went Penarth’s way again on Thursday when St Joseph’s were duly defeated by 37 shots. An excellent 26 - 14 success by Haydn Trow with Neil Gaskell, Ken Brinkworth and Dave Ingram and a fighting 16 - all draw for Alan Stockham were all but eclipsed by a huge 35 - 4 win for Mike England, Reg Jones, George Mackie and Russell Daniel which put the issue well beyond doubt.

It is always a great pleasure to welcome Penarth Windsor to Rectory Road and take the opportunity to renew old friendships.

However, the least said about events on the green the better from the Rectory Road viewpoint as the game proved to be a very much one-sided affair with the visitors defeating Penarth in Wednesday’s Munro Cup match, by winning on all four rinks in a vastly superior performance on the night, and taking maximum points in the process in a thoroughly comprehensive victory by 34 shots overall.

Yet again, the PG2 side turned up trumps in Saturday’s match with close contenders, St Josephs. Captain Russell Daniel can be truly proud of his team after this excellent showing which produced 12 points and consolidated the team’s position as league leaders.

Good wins for Nick Thomas with Brian Hocking, Dick Edwards and Russell Daniel (17 - 16), Berwyn Lansley, Alan Stockham, Colin Hicks and skip Haydn Trow (20 - 13) and a 27 - 13 win for Bob Hill, with Peter Small, Brian Knight and John Whitfield were the outstanding features of this match.

The wheels seem to have come off for the PG1 side at the moment and Saturday’s visit to St Josephs proved to be a completely fruitless one as Penarth sunk without trace in a 43 shot reversal with all four rinks down.

It is rumoured that captain Mike Conway was heard whispering “Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life” following this one.
