THE outstanding feature of last week’s activities at Penarth Bowling Club was the achievement of the ladies in winning the final of the Evening League play-offs.

In Friday’s game, played at Barry Romilly, a consummate performance by the team produced a brilliant 38 - 22 victory over Cardiff BC.

The rink of Chris Church, Jill Gaskell, Kath Jenkins and Belinda Price dominated throughout in a 35 - 6 triumph whilst the other foursome of Lorraine Palmer, Betty Jones, captain Sue Croll and skip Tricia Brinkworth showed their mettle by fighting back from 10 shots down to lose by a mere five at the close.

Captain Sue says she is truly proud of all who took part in this year’s competition, a view that will be thoroughly endorsed by all members at Rectory Road on a superb achievement.

There were two Alliance matches this week for the men. Tuesday produced a 57 - 54 win over Cardiff BC with top honours going to Nick Thomas, Neil Gaskell, Brian Knight and Haydn Trow (20-11).

A single shot win for Reg Jones and two narrow defeats ensured success.

In Thursday’s game at Whitchurch Hospital there was a narrow three shot reversal despite success for Trevor Jenkins, Peter Needham, Ken Lloyd and Roger Gidman (19-16) and 'Bowen the Books', Joe Mackie, Phil Davidge and Paul Church (17-14).

Penarth’s winning PG2 run continued on Wednesday with a home win against Pontyclun. Despite drawing on two rinks, Penarth were always in control.

The outstanding feature was a huge 30 - 7 win for Berwyn Lansley, Mike England, Dave Hilldrup and skip Haydn Trow. Nick Thomas, with the help of Russell Daniel, Dick Edwards and Brian Hocking pulled off a 22 - 10 win and solid performances from Bob Hill (18-18) and Brian Brennan (18-all), whose late finishes are gaining him the title 'prince of darkness' gained yet another priceless 12 points.

Saturday’s Private Greens matches produced disappointment all round with two defeats.

At Rectory Road, Penarth were beaten by 15 shots overall despite winning performances from Mike Conway, Don Shirley, Bob Horne and skip Nick Chandler (24-12) and Jack Beanland, Bob Willmott, Dave Plank and Dave Dalby (17-12).

Sadly there was little to cheer about in the PG2 match at Cardiff Athletic where this season’s unbeaten run came to an abrupt halt.

On a windy day punctuated by heavy showers some of the Penarth side struggled to cope with the conditions on a heavy surface.

A spirited win for Haydn Trow with Berwyn Lansley, Alan Stockham and Roger Gidman (15-13), success for Russell Daniel, Dick Edwards, Brian Hocking and Nick Thomas(19-18) and a hard fought draw for Brian Brennan were completely negated by the total annihilation of the other Penarth rink who just did not perform on the day.
