PENARTH Petanque Club recently hosted the Colin Ballett Doubles Competition at the Kymin in Penarth. Despite the weather forecast, it attracted 12 teams, who were rewarded with beautiful blue skies and wonderful views of Penarth Pier.

The wet ground presented challenges during the day, because as it was drying out with the warm sunshine, the tactics of the game needed to be changed by the players.

During the morning the players had to complete three round-robin timed games, a difficult task, not only to finish in the allocated time, but having to contend with the muddy conditions, which made for an enthralling day of skilful petanque, with varied techniques of pointing and shooting.

After a break for lunch, the players were divided into two groups, depending on their accumulated points, to determine who would play in the Main competition. While the rest went into what is called the Plate.

The winners of the Main competition were Marcia Clode and Brian Spooner of the Penarth Petanque Club, with a convincing win over runners-up Peter Kensett and John M of the Monkstone Petanque Club, Cardiff. A hard fought match which enthralled the spectators.

The Plate competition was won by another Penarth Petanque team, of two skilful ladies, Celia Scott and Anne Mealing, fighting two equally skilful gentlemen from the Wenvoe Petanque Club, Laurent Mirabelle and Geoff Jones.

The game of petanque continues to thrive in Penarth where visitors are welcome at the Kymin any Sunday morning from 11am until 1pm.
