LAST weekend was a tough weekend for Penarth Cricket Club with a number of defeats.

On Saturday (June 17) the first XI travelled away to face Neath.

The hosts won the toss and put the bears into bat first.

Penarth managed 221-8 from their 50 overs with a fantastic 115 from opener Scott Matthews the highlight of their innings.

In response, Neath reached the required target in the 48th over for the loss of four wickets.

Oliver Pike (1-42), Ali Bukkhari (1-56), Richard Skone (1-36) and Jamie Hitchen (1-16) were the wicket takers as Penarth lost out by six wickets.

The seconds hosted Miskin Manor at the Athletic Ground on Saturday.

Having won the toss and chosen to bat, Penarth mustered 195-9 from 50 overs.

Miskin Manor reached their target in the 38th over with the loss of just two wickets, handing them an eight wicket win.

The third XI travelled to Ton Pentre on Saturday.

The hosts won the toss and asked the bears to bat first.

Penarth managed 179-7 from their 40 overs with 54 runs from skipper Conrad Adams.

In reply, Ton Pentre reached the required runs in the 32nd over for the loss of seven wickets handing them a three wicket win.

Mark Frost starred with the ball with 4-18 while John Fitzpatrick (1-69), Rhys McGowan (1-17) and Julien Humphreys (1-42) also contributing.

The fourths hosted Sully Spartans in a local derby match at the Athletic Ground.

The hosts won the toss and decided they would bat first.

Nick Viner's 87 and 39 from Keith James guided Penarth to 199 all out from their 40 overs.

The Penarth bowlers then skittled Sully Spartans out for 76 in the 22nd over.

Peter Ingram led the way with 3-13 with the ball for Penarth with Nick Viner (2-24) and Ethan Mulcahy (1-10) also contributing as the bears ran out winners by 123 runs.

The second XI were in league action again on the Sunday.

They were on the road to play Newport Cricket Club.

The bears won the toss and put their hosts into bat first.

Newport reached 261-6 from their allocated 50 overs as Jamie Hitchen's 4-38 was the pick of the Penarth bowling figures.

John Tose and Jack Thomas also picked up wickets.

In reply, Penarth were bowled out for 211 in the 48th over despite an impressive 64 from Rhys Morgan and 46 from Jack Thomas.

Newport ran out winners by 50 runs.

Next week, the first XI travel to play Cardiff away whilst the second team hosts Cardiff at the Athletic Ground.

The third XI plays hosts to Upper Rhondda also at the Athletic Ground as the fourth team travels to Cynon Valley
