THE OLD Penarthians Mariners under nines and under 11s girls rugby teams put on passing show cases in the beautiful sun at The Capitals Festival Llandaff North.

The under nines faced the Timbers first. With nine players on the pitch instead of six on pitch coach Adam Morse was stretched like a nurse in one flew out of the cuckoo's nest, as the mob of 18 girls crowded every ball in a very scrappy affair but Lucy Lewis determined running and handling stood out like a beacon for the Mariners.

The Mariners clearly listened to Morse codes post-match analysis, the well organised Bridgers struggled to cope with some great offloading and direct lines from Lily Morse allowing some scorching finishing from Flo Robinson.

The heat added to a tasty affair with the keen Capitals, as they ripped through the Mariners lose defence but it was new comer Evie Evans phenomenal work rate that kept the Mariners in touch right to the end.

A drink break rejuvenated the Mariners as they put together some top passages of play against a strong Chargers outfit, Mair Hill's key support saw her break free setting up an excellent try for Phoebe Evans.

The Kites strong outfit stretched every facet of the Mariners defence, with the heat rising and heads dropping it was Daisy Frankling’s superb defence and passing that put the Mariners on the front foot setting up another new comer Lowry Thomas who went on several superb try line charges.

With 50 hot minutes played the hardcode under nines bounced on to the pitch to face the red hot Miners, the rapid pace left the ref blowing with end to end running, but it was Magi Hall's superb finishing that bought smiles all round in the last game.

The Kites under 11s reminded the Mariners that quick passing and direct running was how to score in a game that the Mariners would rather forget.

Coach Simon Palmer's analysis was just the job as the Timbers felt the brunt of a superbly organised Mariners line up, especially Alana Evans determined runs and outstanding defence.

The Capitals is turning into a proper derby as The Mariners girls fell of the physical pace, but it was Mia Halls forceful running that gained Mariners territory with some precise passing to see Lily Chandler on hand to finish several silky tries.

The Chargers hit fast and but could not break Charlotte Palmers spirit as she tagged a record five players in row, leaving the Mariners defence pretty redundant. That helped turn the tide to allow speedster Alexa Kelso to run in a more great tries from deep in what was technically one the Mariners best ever displays.

The Miners strength was clear as Mariners missed tags and looked distant seconds, but Hannah Jones superb catching and direct lines boosted morale with Mille Large on hand to finish some key come back tries.

With 60 minutes in hot conditions played The Mariners work rate was rewarded against the Bridgers, especially Mille Barters who lead the charge up front with several excellent tags and line breaks showing just how much this Mariners Team has moved forward in the WRU Girls Summer Rugby Festivals.

Next week the Mariners head to The Bridgers Festival in Church Village.
