WITH the Sully Spartans second team game away to Newport called off, it was down to the first team to continue their push for promotion with a home win against Tredegar by 23 runs.
Winning the toss the Spartans elected to bat first on a drying wicket with plenty of cloud cover.
Ali (41) and Bablu (38) put on a quick fire standoff 74 in only ten overs and the omens were looking good for a 200 plus score, but as with Sully at the moment once one wicket goes down several follow.
In a bizarre series of events from 74 for 0 the Spartans ended up on 107 for 5 and looking in trouble.
Gerrard and Morgan came to the crease and slowly pushed the score along with a partnership of 76 before Morgan was out for 33 and the score was now on 183 for 6.
Gerrard hit two fours in the last over leaving the Spartans on 191 for 7 from the allotted 40 overs and Gerrard not out for an excellent 42, with a decent score to defend on this slow and turning wicket.
Skipper Morgan took the difficult decision to bowl slower pace bowlers from the start and after 20 overs the away side had reached only 83 so it was game on.
Sathish with 1 for 29 and Morgan 3 for 20 took the wind out of the Tredegar teams sails and with Saeed 3 for 18 and Sudhi coming back with two wickets the game was won and the away side were 168 for 8 from their allotted 40 overs.
