PENARTH'S cricketers were beaten in an incredibly tight final of the South Wales Premier Cricket League T20 competition last weekend.

Having earned their place at finals day at the Swalec Stadium in Cardiff on Sunday (August 13), they beat Mumbles in the semi final to set up a decider against Port Talbot Town who won the toss and batted first.

Port Talbot made 159-5 with an unbeaten 77 from Daniel Rowe leading the way.

Ali Bukkhari was the pick of the Penarth bowlers with 2-16.

In reply, Penarth fell agonisingly short, finishing on 155-7 and losing by just four runs.

Skipper Jonathan Davies top scored with 42 and Dafydd Manley hit 30 not out but it just wasn't enough for the bears.

On Saturday, the first team lost out in the league away at Newport.

Having chosen to bat first having won the toss, the bears were bowled out for 162 with one over remaining.

Nick Morgan with 44 and Tom Sidford with 35 led the way with the bat for Penarth who were facing the likes of ex Glamorgan stars Dean Cosker (3-27) and Mark Wallace.

Newport reached the required target in the 38th over of their innings with captain Matthew Norris hitting 49.

Nathan Piddock (1-26) and Tom Sidford (1-29) took the wickets as Newport ran out winners by seven wickets.

The seconds also went down to Newport in a game played at the Athletic Ground.

Penarth were asked to bat first by their visitors who bowled them out for 71 in the 28th over.

Jamie Hitchen top scored with 29 for the bears.

Newport reached the required total in the 24th over without losing a wicket as Will Smale (39) and Tom Evans (15) finished unbeaten.

The third team won their game on Saturday as they hosted Ton Pentre.

The hosts asked Ton Pentre to bat first and managed to bowl them out for 107 in the 35th over with Rhys McGowan taking an incredibly 4-8, ably supported by Neil Stephens' 2-7 and 2-23 from Steffan Crimp.

Penarth reached their target without losing a wicket.

Pete Docherty retired after reaching 51 with Conrad Adams (27) and Gregg Cross (14) seeing the team home to a 10 wicket victory.

Next week the firsts welcome Neath to the Athletic Ground while the seconds travel to Miskin Manor.

The thirds travel to Upper Rhondda and the fourths host Cynon Valley.
