SULLY Centurions Cricket Club travelled to Monkswood on the back of last week’s opening day victory, full of confidence.

But they missed the opportunity to top the table at this early stage as they lost by 4 wickets.

After being put into bat the opening pair of Rhett Jones and Gethin Hicks took the score along to 42 before Hicks became Matthew Malson's first victim, being caught for 8.

Seven runs later, Jones also fell to the same bowler for 36.

Another two quick wickets left Centurions on 55 for 4 in the 18th over.

However, fifth wicket stand of 63 between David Goodway (31) and Lloyd Bruce (30) helped to steady the ship.

Following Bruce's departure on 118, Goodway and skipper Jake Griffett, who ended up with 30 runs, put on 24 and were looking in good form until the normally cautious Goodway missed a straight one, with the score on 142.

A decent lower order contribution from Alfie Lee (14) helped push the score along. But the last two wickets fell cheaply and Sully ended on 192 all out.

For Monkswood, Malson (4-29) and Trumper (4-18) did most of the damage.

Monkswood lost an early wicket when Ferriday removed Malson for 4 with the score on 22.

Tucker also went for the same score, being out LBW to Jake Griffett in the ninth over.

Opener Michael Jones reached his half century before falling to Goodway, being caught behind for 51.

Then a 98-run partnership between Mark Jones (36) and Watkins (69 not out) took the game out of Sully's reach and the target was reached in the 44th over, for he loss of 6 wickets.

For Centurions, there were two wickets each for Ferriday and Lee, along with one apiece for J Griffett and Goodway.

2nd XI

The 2nds hosted Ponthir at Burnham Avenue and ran out winners by 9 wickets, but not before the visitors had mounted a fine comeback, after being on the ropes early on in their innings.

Ponthir batted first and lost two wickets in the first over, both to the swing of Harish. The wickets kept tumbling, with Harish taking five of them.

Nick Jones added one, to leave the visitors on just 16 for 6 after 11 overs.

However, a remarkable fightback, including a 68-run 7th wicket partnership between Davies (44) and Cook (13) gave Ponthir some hope.

A run out and a wicket from Iwan Thomas completed the wickets as Ponthir managed to bat out their 40 overs, finishing on 96 for 8.

After tea, Centurions lost the wicket of new boy Halai for 3, but Ben Spear (45) and Russell Thomas (35) saw Sully home for the loss of just that one wicket.
