On Sat, 26th May, the Sports hosted Cowbridge in their final group qualifying Carruthers Shield fixture, in which progress for either side was virtually impossible due to the aggregate scores in their earlier games. Still Sully Sports approached the game with some hope and a lot of determination, despite being hit by late withdrawals, resulting in major changes on 3 rinks.

Rob Matthews’ rink held a slender 1 shot lead after 10 ends, then slowly eased away to finally record a 10 shot win.

Keith Romans’ rink had a great tussle being behind until the 10th , after losing the 11th they led after the 15th, only to suffer in the final ends to lose by 3 shots.

Graham Brown’s rink had the closest contest of the day, winning a shot on the 1st end, then lost the lead on the 2nd, and slowly fell further behind until they were 16-8 down with 6 ends to play, at which point the fightback commenced, and needing 2 on the last to tie (or 3 to win) they were lying 1 shot a one wood left, but with a very risky head, Graham just failed to clinch another shot(s) and went down by one.

Lee Romans rink took the day’s honours, not only securing an aggregate win, but also they scored a rare maximum 8 shots on an (5th) end. Cowbridge then recovered over the next 9 ends, including a 6 shot end of their own, to be 6 behind after 14 ends, but a strong last 7 ends stretched the winning margin to 19 shots.

Rink Scores:

R Knight, J Kirk, C Coomber, R Matthews 20-10;

M Morgan, A Thompson, C Spillane, G Brown 16-17;

P Holland, B Whyman, L Adams, K Romans 16-19;

M Stafford, T Smith, G Currie, L Romans. 32-13.

On Wed. 30th May, the Sports are at home to the Murch in a Munro Cup fixture, and resume their Private Greens fixtures when they host St Joseph’s, on Sat. 2nd Jun.

Sully Sports Ladies Bowls Club, on a lovely evening, visited Sofia Gardens, to play Cardiff G, in the Evening League, on Tues. 22nd May, and suffered their 1st loss of the season. The early exchanges were relatively even, but the hosts’ canny bowling got them into a lead of 6 shots after 8 ends, and frustrated the Sports attempts of a late fightback.

Rink Scores:

S Phillips, M Smith, M Dare, Carol Jenkins 14-21;

R Williams, P Vaughan, L Woodcock, Stef Parker 14-27.

This setback hasn’t dampened the ladies’ enthusiasm and they look forward very much to their next fixture tomorrow (Fri. 1st June) at home to Cowbridge.
