THE newly promoted Windsor Bowls Club first team began their league season with a home match against St Fagans and enjoyed a most encouraging win by 69 shots to 63, gaining 12 league points in the process.

Richard Flitney, captain Pete Morrish, Ian Paterson and skip Matthew Woodcock led the way with a 20-11 victory in which Paterson and Woodcock excelled.

There was also a good win for Ken McLeod’s rink ably assisted by Charlie Lewis, Clive Palfrey and Rod Hudson with a score of 18-12.

The third rink, three down on the last end, have skip Graham Carlisle to thank for a four shot turnaround giving them victory by 18 shots to 17.

Graham had great support throughout from Mike Matthews, Mal Hope and David Rees.

The final rink did not really click on the day and it was a disappointing result for skip Tony Holmes, Tom Evans, Mike Lloyd-Jones and Paul Gunter by 13 shots to 23.

The PG2 team travelled to Cardiff Sophia Gardens anticipating one of their toughest games of the season but they pushed the home team all the way, finally going down by only 7 shots.

There was however some consolation as they actually won two and drew one of the four rinks to gain valuable league points.

Tommy Owen, Roger Ellis, Frank Coleman and David Hales 20-16. Dave Johnson, Alan Dudley, Mike Cuccinello and captain Simon Latham 17-14.

Alan Davies, Alun Daniel, Keith Williams and Derek Davies 18-18.

Unfortunately, the other rink of John Hardess, Mike Fullbrook, Brian Rogers and Dave Howells were never really in the hunt and went down heavily by 24 shots to 10.

The midweek Munro Cup team played away at Cowbridge and failed to come to grips with the artificial surface, losing by 58 to 71.

There were however winning performances on two rinks; Charlie Lewis, Ian Mathias, Clive Palfrey and Matt Woodcok 23-14.

Mike Matthews, Steve Ellard, Dave Hales and Paul Gunter 18-16.

Finally, the Alliance team could not match the skills of the opposition away at Penylan losing by 10 shots.

Captain Dave Howells recorded the only success as, with Tommy Owen, Tim White, Tom Evans, they came away with a 17-11 scoreline.
