CWRT y Vil skittles team who play their home matches at the Cogan Coronation Club, achieved a historic treble this season, winning the Penarth & District Premier League title, the Champion of Champions trophy and the Marie Curie Cup.

It was the seventh time in the last 11 years that the team has won the Premier League and in a tough battle all season with their closest rivals the Clive Rams, pipped the Rams by only two points.

Needing to win the last game of the season against the Dads Army, Cwrt y Vil contrived to lose the game, despite Dads Army only having 11 players.

The Rams then needed to beat the Railway Sleepers away the same night, to force a play-off.

In the end the Railway won comfortably and the title went to Cwrt y Vil.

The Champion of Champions play-off match was hosted by the Llandough Legion and the three teams contesting the cup were Cwrt y Vil, Lower Boys, winners of the Division One title and the Cross Keys Athletic, winners of Division Two.

After four rolls the match became a two horse race between Cwrt y Vil and the Keys and with Cwrt y Vil rolling last it was left to their anchor man Dave Garner to hit six pins to draw and seven to win the game. Dave duly obliged and hit a memorable eight pins.

With a disappointing number of teams entering the Marie Curie Cup, the final was held on the left hand alley at the Ex Serviceman’s Club, between the Railway Sleepers and Cwrt y Vil.

In a match that could have gone either way, the Sleepers who required 24 pins from the last three players, hit eight, eight and with their anchor man then hitting six off his first ball, managed to miss with the next two balls and handed the cup to Cwrt y Vil.

It was a valiant effort by the Sleepers, which was a great contest all night.
