SITTING on top of the Munro Cup table seemed to have a dizzying affect on Penarth Bowling Club last week as the visit to the Windsor green proved somewhat distressing for 3 of the rinks.

Only Colin Grant, Phil Crocker, Guy Thomas and Terry Buckingham engineered the only winning rink (23-15) with a competent display by taking control on the 6th end and staying ahead right to the end.

The Dave Dalby rink kept themselves in the hunt throughout, eventually going down by 3 shots (16-19).

The result of the game was defined by a disastrous last 5 ends on both the Clive Fry and Nick Chandler rinks.

Clive, together with Paul, Church, Bob Lewis and Derek Blainey managed to reverse a winning margin of 13-7 on the 13th end by dropping 8 shots on the final run in to lose 13 - 15 on the 18th.

A much worse situation unfolded when Nick Chandler, Bob Horne, Jack Beanland and Mike Conway somehow engineered a reversal from 14-11 up on the 14th end to a loss by 18 - 24. this was achieved by dropping 13 shots on the last 4 ends.

Matters improved on the weekend when a much changed PG1 side took on and beat Whitchurch Hospital by 33 shots ( 94 - 61 ).

The biggest contributor to the win was a superb 24 shot ( 38 - 14 ) victory from the Bob Horne, Jack Beanland, Berwyn Lansley and Mike Conway. A massive tally of 20 shots were accrued in the last 6 ends. Jack was heard to suggest that Nick Chandler needs to go to more rock concerts.

Clive Fry, Paul Church, Mike England and Phil Davies also weighed in with an impressive win ( 22 - 8 ) to assist the cause. Both Phil Crocker (21-23) and Bob Lewis ( 13-16 ) were narrowly defeated in tight games on their rinks. A 10-point haul was a satisfactory result on the day.

A somewhat decimated PG2 side travelled across to Dinas Powis to encounter a surprisingly strong opposition facing them.

The obvious strengthened DP side duly took control of events on the green to inflict a 29 shot defeat (57-96).

One solitary point was gained from the result when Lawrence Brooke, Russell Daniel, Dave Ingram & Alex Forsyth managed to salvage a 20-20 draw.

Colin Hicks, Ron Birkby, Alan Stockham & Charlie Mould will rue the last 4 ends as they squandered a 7-shot lead by dropping 9 shots ending up losing by 17 - 18.

Brian Knight and his rink fought manfully but were unable to hold off a strong DP four. Dropping a 7 on the 11th end and a 5 on the 13th did not help matters and contributed to a 14 - 27 loss.

Even worse was the 6 - 31 reversal inflicted by Richie Janes on a gallant Bob Hill and his men.

A disappointing afternoon for Capt Alan and his men.

Much more cheery results have come forth from the Ladies of the Rectory with a most satisfying victory at the Windsor & an equally pleasing win at Rhiwbina.

The Evening league fixture at Windsor saw PBC field 2 strong rinks securing a 41 - 27 win. Sue Croll, Betty Jones, Wendy Grant & Lorraine Palmer grasped control of their game from the ninth end and ran out convincing winners by 24 - 18.

Belinda Price, Kath Jenkins, Jane Edwards & Christina Church stormed off to lead 15-2 by the 14th end. A slight wobble over the next 3 ends gave Windsor 7 shots to pull back 15 - 9.

Two shots on the last end gave Belinda an impressive 17 - 9 win.

Later in the week the Afternoon league 3 rink team travelled over to Rhiwbina where another encouraging win was the result for Penarth. Wendy Grant, Tricia Brinkworth, Barbara Brown and Diana Wilcocks led the way with a stirring 25 - 6 score, with them winning 13 of the 18 ends played.

Sue Croll, Joan Lewis, Norma Duggan & Jill Gaskell were not to be outdone as they completely controlled the second half of the game running out easy victors by 24 - 10.

Betty Jones, June Williams, Sandra Roberts & Lynda Jones fought out a gallant battle but their efforts were thwarted continually resulting in defeat by 7 -26. Overall though an excellent week's bowling.
