ON Wed, 18th Jul, Sully Sports Men’s Bowls team hosted St Albans in a friendly, which was enjoyable, good natured, low scoring, and a very close fought encounter.

The Sports won 1 rink, drew on another, and despite losing on 2 rinks, won the aggregate by 5 shots.

K Romans’ rink saw the scores so tight throughout, but in the last 3 ends the visitors scored two 3s to the home’s 2, to snatch a 3 shot win .

C Coomber’s rink won 9 of the 15 ends, but all by a single shot, except for a 2 on the 10th, but the Buns made the decisive break with a 4 on the 9th, together with a 3 and two 2s, to have enough shots in hand to fend off a late home challenge and win 13-10.

G Currie’s rink raced off to an early 6-0 lead after 4 ends, only to lose 6 of the next 7 ends to find themselves 4 shots down.

Winning the next 3 ends, including a 5 on the penultimate end, victory was almost ensured, but the visiting skip’s last wood turned a 2 shot lie into a 4, and grabbed an honourable draw at 15-15.

G Brown’s rink were 6-1 down after 6 ends, and then found their rhythm to only concede two more ends (3 shots) scoring 19 shots in the process to clinch the rink win 20-9, and the overall aggregate of 54-49.

Rink Scores:

M Morgan, D Burbidge, R Giddings, K Romans 9-12;

P Collier, J Harries, A Fitt, C Coomber 10-13;

M Stafford, P Robbins, D Austin, G Currie 15-15;

R Knight, B Daniells, P Holland, G Brown 20-9.

Sully Sports Men’s Bowls Club visited Pentyrch on Sat, 21st Jul, in the PG1s, on a very fast and tricky “green.”

Despite winning 3 of the 4 rinks, the Sports suffered a 1 shot aggregate loss, as the home skip’s final wood on the last rink to finish, drove into the head to convert a losing lie into the 2 shots required for the aggregate win.

The result saw Pentyrch record the double over the Sports, and gained their 2nd win in the Cup so far this season.

Sully Sports, on aggregate, were down throughout, but always in contention as on all 4 rinks they won more ends than Pentyrch.

The Sports trailed by 5 shots after 5 ends, and 3 shots at 10 and 15, and then finished agonisingly short by 1 at the 21st.

Graham Brown’s rink won more ends than their hosts but only scored a single each time, and from a 3-3 score after 5 ends, the hosts scored heavily on most ends that they won, to register a comfortable 27-11 win.

The lead changed hands several times until the 9th end, on Charlie Coomber’s rink, but a fine run of 7 winning ends (from the 7th) seemed to put the Sports in a good position, only for the hosts to claw back to within a shot after 16 ends.

Both sides took 3 shots each over the next 4 ends.

Thus with only a 1 shot in it on the final end, the result could gone either way, but the Sports held their nerve to shut out their hosts for a single shot, and took the win by 22-20.

It was also very changeable on Lee Roman’s rink, as at 10 ends they were 10-5 down, with the home skip showing great skill to rescue and win ends on which, with he final wood he turned a loss into a gain – e.g. on 2 ends he took a shot win from 6 down, and 4 down.

Under Lee’s encouragement, the Sports found their touch to win 9 of the remaining ends, scoring 16 shots of their own and limiting the home rink to 2 shots, to secure a 21-12 win.

Not to be outdone, there was also drama galore on Bob Matthews’ rink.

After 14 ends, 6 wins each, the Sports trailed by a shot, took the lead on the 15th and played the last with a 6 shot cushion, which, as they were the last rink on the Green, was enough to take the aggregate, but a dramatic final two woods overturned a 3 shot lie in favour of the Sports, to a 2 shot win for the hosts, and thus the 24-20 win for the Sports was not quite enough for the aggregate.

Rink Scores:

A Thompson, D Austin, C Spillane, G Brown 11-27;

M Morgan, P Holland, A Collard, C Coomber 22-20;

B Whyman, M Stafford, K Romans, L Romans 21-12;

R Knight, G Currie, A Middleton, R Matthews 24-20.

Next Wed. 25th Jul, the Sports host Belle Vue in the Munro Cup, and are at home again to Cardiff Athletic on Sat. 28th Jul, in the PG1s.

The Ladies Section travelled to Cowbridge for their latest Evening League fixture, on Mon 16th Jul, drew on one rink and edge the other by 3 shots to ensure an aggregate win 35-32.

Rink Scores:

S Phillips, M Smith, M Dare, C Jenkins 20-20;

C Harries, R Williams, L Woodcock, S Parker 15-12
