ON the first league match of the season, Windsor beat St Fagans, but thereafter, each side’s fortune has gone in different directions.

Since that day, the Windsor first team has suffered a series of defeats in contrast to the better fortune of St Fagans.

That was all forgotten on Saturday as the team played superbly to win away on three rinks and draw on the fourth thereby securing 13 vital league points.

Leading the way was skip Rod Hudson with Richard Flitney, captain Pete Morrish and Mal Hope securing a 22 shots to 9 win.

The win was in no small measure due to Richard Flitney who continued to show how vital the lead bowler can be.

There were also important wins for Matt Woodcock with Tom Evans, Phil Gooding and Clive Palfrey 21/19 and for Ken McLeod with Mike Matthews, Keith Williams and Charlie Lewis 30/29. On the final rink, Graham Carlisle’s rink were just caught on the last end and drew 19/19, much to the relief of his former teammates at St Fagans.

Graham was ably assisted by Steve Ellard, Eddie Thorne and David Rees.

Despite several enforced changes, the players showed bowling skills and a great team spirit in the 16 shot victory.

The Second team, also showing a number of enforced changes, really struggled against Cardiff and were well beaten by 91 shots to 58 .

Captain Simon Latham worked so hard to put together a side only to be faced with the non-arrival of one of his players.

Step up Ken Trenchard, the youthful nonagenarian. Overcoming the toil of 21 ends in extremely hot conditions, Ken proved an example of the commitment which the club deserves from all its players.

The rink scores were Arty Woodcock, Emrys Jones, David Hales and Derek Davies 19/15.

Dave Johnson, Alan Dudley, Mike Cucciniello and Simon Latham15/30. Mike Dacey, Ken Trenchard, Dave Brenton and Alun Daniel12/28.

Brin Peregrine, John Hardess, Brian Rogers and Dave Howells 9/18.

Two days earlier, there was also a re-arranged PG1 game away at Rhiwbina.

The team owes its thanks to the PG2 players who stepped up to help out on this occasion.

It seemed a somewhat daunting task, having lost at home to Rhiwbina the previous week.

However, despite coming up short, the team gave their very best. The rink scores were Richard Flitney, Pete Morrish, Mal Hope and Rod Hudson 13/16. Tom Evans, Phil Gooding, Derek Davies and Matt Woodcock 21/16.

Mike Matthews, Keith Williams, Dave Lewis and Ken McLeod 18/24. Steve Ellard, Charlie Lewis, Dave Rees and Graham Carlisle 14/21.

At least it was 2 points gained in the cause.

It was a disappointing week for the Alliance team, going down heavily to Cardiff Athletic but as usual the players’ enjoyment of these Alliance fixtures far outways the result.

Another big win for the Munro Cup team, this time against Barry Central by 72 shots to 47. Alan Davies, Mike Matthews, Steve Ellard and Clive Palfrey 18/8. Ian Mathias, Brian Rogers, David Hales and Charlie Lewis 13/16.

Tommy Owen, Keith Williams, Pete Morrish and Richard Flitney 20/9.

Tom Evans, captain Eddie Thorne, Arty Woodcock and Mal Hope 21/14.

It was also a poor week for the Ladies after their recent run of success.

This time it was a hat trick of losses but as usual played in the spirit of friendship against many old friends.

In the Evening League, it was a 21/29 defeat at the hands of Mackintosh.

Ann Morrish, Brenda Dunlop, Veronica Flitney and Moyra Owen 12/14. Chris Gunter, Di Roper, Di Thomas, Kay Dyer 9/15. The Double Rink faced a strong Millwood team.

Mary de Claire, Mary Scourfield, Chris Gunter and Di Ellard 7/18. Pam Farrell, Ruth Evans, Gill Latham and Anne Rees 6/17.

The final loss was for the Afternoon League, defeat coming at the hands of Rectory Road.

There was however a good win for Di Thomas with Sue Howells, Anne Rees and Angela Hudson by 26 shots to 19.

Not such a good story for the other two rinks.

Jane Williams, Brenda Dunlop, Veronica Flitney and Kay Dyer 14/19. Julie Davies, Mary Scarrett, Di Roper and Moyra Owen 5/23.
