Penarth pupils enjoy Kwik Cricket Festival

PUPILS from local primary schools including Fairfield and St Joseph's took part in the recent Vale of Glamorgan Kwik Cricket festival.

Organised by the Vale Council’s Dragon Sport team, and sponsored by ASDA’s Cardiff Bay store, the festival featured eight-a-side games played by mixed teams of boys and girls at Penarth Athletic Ground.

Ysgol Iolo Morgannwg (Cowbridge) took the 2009 title by beating last year’s champions, Llangan Primary School, in the final.

Dragon Sport is a Sports Council for Wales initiative funded by the National Lottery, designed to offer seven-11 year olds fun and enjoyable sporting opportunities.

It focuses on rugby, football, netball, hockey, golf, athletics, tennis and cricket, and also aims to recruit and train volunteers who wish to assist, set up or run clubs.

Vale Dragon Sport assistant Pete Hardwick said: “By playing to the rules of Kwik cricket, with appropriate sized equipment, this festival was an excellent opportunity for the boys and girls to play the game and develop their skills against other schools.

"Each victory was greeted with huge cheers and celebrations, so I think they all had a fantastic day!

"I’d like to thank ASDA for sponsoring the event, Stanwell School Year 11 pupil Matthew Jones who was a brilliant help during the day, and groundsman Andrew Cripps who prepared the five pitches.”

Staff from ASDA also provided healthy refreshments for all the children.

Diane Smith from the Cardiff Bay store said: “We are keen to promote the values of healthy eating and healthy lifestyles in the community, so we were delighted to support this cricket festival.”

Throughout the summer holidays, ASDA are offering free sports sessions for children - details in-store or online at www.asda-sportingchance.co.uk
