Penarth CC's Adam Shantry hits 2 tons in 2 weeks!

PENARTH 1st XI entertained Blackwood at the Athletic Field last Saturday and lost the toss.

Away captain Huw Wilcox had no hesitation in bowling first on a wicket which had been left uncovered during the previous day-and-a-half's downpours.

It took just two balls for Penarth to lose a wicket as Richard Skone was caught behind for 0. Then, shortly after, last week's centurion Adam Shantry was dropped before he had scored a run.

However, he made the most of being given a life, and along with Tom Sidford, the pair cautiously inched the score along to 93 during the next 33 overs, until Tom was bowled for a patient 37.

Nick Morgan was the next to fall for just 6 as the ball stuck in the pitch, lollipopping a catch to cover, and JJ Davies also fell cheaply, caught for just 4.

James Docherty joined Shantry at the crease and the pair accelerated the innings, adding 50 in 7 overs before James was caught reverse lapping for 37.

The Penarth innings finished on 210-7, but not before Adam had completed his second century in two weeks, finishing with 101 not out.

In reply, the visitors made good use of the now much improved wicket, which had been baked through the day by glorious sunshine, scoring freely against the seamers and reaching 73 for 1 in just 17 overs, before confusion led to a run out.

The introduction of Penarth's spinners turned the tide however, as Mark Thomas continued his fine form, returning figures of 10-3-23-2, and Richard Skone took 1 wicket from his 10 overs, conceding just 13 runs.

Adam Shantry, James Docherty and Mark Frost also chipped in with a wicket apiece as the second innings closed on 195 for 7.

So another winning draw for Penarth closes the gap on the sides above them, but with the prospect of playing high-flying Cardiff away next week to complete the first half of the league programme, another good performance will be needed to maintain the momentum gained over recent weeks.

SUNDAY

On Sunday, Penarth, Pentyrch and Abergavenny competed in the national 20/20 competition at the Athletic Field.

Play got underway at 11am with Penarth taking on Pentyrch in the first game. The home side amassed 228 for 3 from their 20 overs, with Richard Skone scoring 109no. Nick Morgan 30, James Docherty 27, Tom Sidford 22, and JJ Davies 18no.

Pentyrch never seriously threatened that imposing total as they finished on 165 for 8.

Abergavenny also beat Pentyrch, meaning that the winner of the final game would progress to the next stage.

Penarth again batted first and this time got an even bigger total, scoring 247 for 5, Tom Sidford top-scoring with 85 from 43 balls and James Docherty powering 71 from just 31 balls. JJ Davies finished the innings with 40no.

Again the visitors never seriously challenged that total, scoring 168 for 7 from their 20 overs.

Penarth will now play the winners of the other three groups from the South Wales Premier League in the Regional Finals Day at Newport on August 9, and would welcome travelling support.
