Penarth LTC's 125th anniversary finals

THE 125TH anniversary club championship finals take place this Saturday, July 11, at Penarth Lawn Tennis Club in Rectory Road.

The tennis action starts at 2pm with the Men's and Ladies' singles finals which are then followed by the Men's and Ladies' doubles at 4pm and finally the Mixed doubles at 6pm.

The event this year is part of the Penarth Holiday Festival and the gates are open to everyone. As well as some fine tennis there will be a cream tea from 3pm followed by a barbecue from 5pm. The bar will also be open all day.

The club itself was formed in 1884 although the first club championship didn’t take place until 1885. Other than breaks for the World Wars the championship has taken place every year since.

The champions' board in the clubhouse shows every winner of the men's and ladies' singles from 1885 to the current day and includes some well known Penarth families.

The first men's champion was Frank Hancock, part of the famous brewing family and a Welsh rugby international. Other well known Penarth sporting names included in the list of champions include Sweet-Escott, Gibbs and Freeman.

Members and non-members alike are invited along to watch the current generation of players battle to join these illustrious names and carve a little piece of history for themselves.
