Karate success for Penarth youngsters

ON Monday, November 9, some 11 junior students of Penarth AKAD (Association of Karate and Allied Disciplines) took part in their gradings.

This involved them performing basic techniques (Kihon), pre arranged sparring (Kumite) and a memorised sequence of movements (Kata) - all under the watchful eye of the AKAD’s chief examiner Colin Jenkins, 7th Dan.

Five pupils were grading to orange belt and six to red belt. All the hard work over the past few weeks paid off with everyone successful in achieving their belts.

The club trains on a Monday evening at Ysgol Pen-y-Garth’s Sports hall.

From January there will be a new club on a Wednesday evening (6-7pm) for beginners and new members. The club is run by Sully resident Stuart Creedon, currently a 4th Dan Black belt, but training towards his 5th Dan grading.

The club has been training in Penarth since March 2007 after relocating from Cardiff.

It offers youngsters the chance to be physically active, have fun and meet new friends in an enjoyable and friendly atmosphere. New members to the club are welcome, without having to sign up to a number of classes.
