SULLY SPORTS 28 MAGOR 7
FOR THE first time in its history, because of the ageing of the Barry Plastics RFC players, the annual Nigel Westall charity fixture saw an invited opposition with Magor Vets RFC competing for the Cup.
In almost perfect conditions the game was full of running rugby, and played in a great spirit. Before kick-off a minute's silence was observed by players and supporters in memory of past players and members.
The pace of the game, considering the high average age of the players, was fast from the outset, with both sides mounting well-supported attacks.
But it took 20 minutes before the defences were breached, when rampaging No 8 Scott Mills crashed through several would-be tacklers following a 5 metre scrum to score the opening try, well converted by the livewire outside-half Chris Cummins.
From the restart the Sports attacked from in their 22, and winger Dave Stillman outsped the cover defence and ran in from the halfway line, again Cummins converting.
Once again play went from end to end in what was an even battle, only for the Sports to score another long range try with the last move of the half, when winger Wayne Jones finished off a great bout of handling and support play. Cummins added the conversion.
Magor were stunned to be down by 21 points, but to their credit kept playing with panache and confidence, and although both sides continued to keep the ball alive, only two scores came in a frantic second period.
Ten minutes into the half, Magor finished off a series of rucks and mauls in the home 22 for a well deserved converted try.
The last try, right on the final whistle was another classic handling move that provided Cummins with a try and conversion.
The players and their large band of supporters then retired to the bar for a great afternoon of hospitality and fundraising, and even the disappointment of the defeat of Wales in Dublin did not dampen the festivities.
Nigel Westall's family and friends were grateful, and thanked the Sully Sports Club, both teams and sets of supporters for another wonderful memorial day, and for the charity monies raised – which exceeded £300.
With the final 6 Nations game (Wales v Italy) this Saturday, Sully Sports RFC do not have a game, and their next fixture is away to Whitchurch RFC on March 27, ko 2.30pm.
Players should note that the season's final two fixtures are being arranged away to Dowty RFC (overnight stay in Gloucester) on April 24, and away to Magor RFC (with an evening BBQ) on May 1.
Provisional dates: AGM, Wednesday, May 12 (Market Street) and Presentation Dinner Dance, Saturday, June 5 (Sully).
