Cogan Coronation punished by late goals

COGAN CORONATION 0 TONYREFAIL 2

A DISAPPOINTING second half performance capped by two late goals for visitors Tonyrefail saw Cogan lose a league game for the first time since late October, last Saturday.

The Rhondda Valley side became the first team to take 3 points away from the Rec in a league match this season as they punished Cogan's late mistakes in a game that had looked destined to finish goalless.

The result was all the more disappointing as it followed a bright start from the home side who had threatened to overrun their opponents with some slick passing and intelligent movement. But eventually Tonyrefail got into the game and it settled into a pattern of few chances and mistakes aplenty in which goals looked unlikely.

Cogan's energetic start should have seen them 3 goals to the good in the first 20 minutes. Gareth Clarke, Jon Carpentier, Keiron James and Haidn Dibble were all heavily involved as Cogan stretched their opponents, especially down the left flank, and opportunities came at regular intervals in the first quarter.

The first of several good chances fell to Nathan Self whose lack of confidence betrayed him as he snatched at a left footed shot from 15 yards when he had time to settle himself and pick his spot. Shortly afterwards Keiron James raced on to a misplaced pass and found himself one on one with Richards in the Tonyrefail goal but pulled his shot inches wide of the far post.

Several good crosses eluded runners in the box and a driving run from Carpentier took him past three opponents and into the 6 yard box but his cross-cum-shot went across the goal and was turned behind for a corner.

At the other end Cogan keeper Mark Hussey was called into action, saving well from Stephen Powell's header, on what was a rare Tonyrefail foray. Although the visitors came more into the match Cogan still held the upper hand but the energy that had seen them creating chances in the early stages dipped and the game became littered with mistakes as the first half came to an end.

The home team dominated possession and territory in the opening part of the second half but scoring chances were few and far between. A lack of cohesion in the final third meant that Tonyrefail were able to soak up a fair amount of pressure without too much difficulty and to pose more of a threat on the break.

Enoch, Jenkins and Powell combined well in attack for them and Hussey was forced into a second good save around the hour mark from Enoch.

With too many passes misplaced and options lacking around their opponents goal, Cogan then switched off and fell for a sucker punch with 15 minutes remaining. Tonyrefail had a throw in on the left deep inside their own half but Cogan failed to get tight enough to stop the ball coming out of defence. Before they had a chance to spot the danger the visitors moved the ball infield from the left and substitute Tranter raced on to a ball over the top and lifted it over Hussey and into the net.

Cogan introduced Golledge, Ah Mun and Humphries and pushed Liam Jones inside in an attempt to change things but the equaliser never looked on the cards despite Cogan's efforts and the visitors put the seal on it in stoppage time.

Cogan had pushed men forward and found themselves caught on the break. Racing back towards goal Gareth Clarke found himself in unfamiliar territory as the final defender and as Jenkins raced clear near the edge of the box Clarke fouled him and was shown an inevitable red card. The referee adjudged that the foul was committed inside the penalty area and the impressive Powell tucked away the penalty to complete a good day for his team.

Cogan will be looking to bounce back this coming Saturday as St Athan visit the Rec, kick off 2pm and all remaining fixtures are available at the club website, www.pitchero.com/clubs/cogancoronationafc/
