GLAMORGANSHIRE Golf Club celebrated their long connection with the Barbarians Rugby Football Club with their annual Barbarian Golf Weekend.

The Baa-Baas are unique in that they have no ground, no clubhouse, no entry fee, and no subscription. It is in every respect a touring club, for there are no home matches.

The nearest to a clubhouse was the spiritual home at Easter from 1901-1971, the Esplanade Hotel in Penarth.

It is probable that no other golf club in the world can lay claim to have hosted so many great rugby players from all over the world, because the famous Barbarians visited The Glamorganshire every Easter Sunday between 1901 and 1996 as part of their traditional Easter weekend touring fixtures against famous Welsh clubs.

The Baa-Baas played Penarth RFC on Good Friday, Cardiff RFC on Saturday, Swansea RFC on Easter Monday and Newport RFC on Tuesday.

They spent all day Sunday at The Glamorganshire, playing their golf tournament under their unique rules and having a sing-song with club members in the evening.

During most of the 20th century the best rugby players in the world would have tasted the club's hospitality.

The Glamorganshire maintains its strong links with the Barbarians by annually staging the Barbarian Golf Weekend.

Last Saturday, over 200 club members competed for the Barbarian Cup. It was won by Liam Beddard, younger son of this year's Club Captain, Maurice Beddard. Liam shot 74 off a 9 handicap for a net 65.

On Sunday, teams representing various local rugby clubs and featuring many ex-Barbarians and rugby internationals competed for The Barbarian Trophy and The Cliff Morgan Trophy.

Following a shotgun start for 96 golfers in very windy conditions, The Barbarian Trophy (best team Stableford score) was won by Penarth RFC , represented by Jim Corsi, Rhys Lakin, Peter Goodfellow and Chris Payne (78 points).

The Cliff Morgan Trophy (best four ball, better ball score) was won by Jim Corsi and Rhys Lakin (Penarth RFC) with a score of 40 Stableford points.

At a glittering dinner on Sunday evening the winners were presented with their prizes by Peter Walker MBE, ex-Glamorgan and England cricketer, former President of Glamorgan Cricket Club, and cricket writer and broadcaster, who also gave a very entertaining after-dinner address.
