SULLY RFC 28
MACHEN RFC 2NDS 20
SULLY'S home campaign got off to a great start last Saturday with a victory over visiting Machen RFC Seconds.
With Sully Captain Rhys John busy sunning himself on his honeymoon, the leadership duties were handed to Russell Welch for the friendly tie.
With a limited number of available players, it was a big ask of the Sully team to put on a performance, but that is exactly what they did.
The Machen pack was arguably the most organised Sully have faced so far this season, so control of the scrum and breakdown area was a real credit to all the hard working forwards.
Gareth Lakin made his first start for Sully and was looking good until an unfortunate bang on the head left him a little worse for wear and with a free trip to the Heath hospital.
It was also encouraging seeing new player Dom Marshman adapting well to his role at blindside flanker and fitting in well with Jason Denton and Russell Welch at the back of the scrum.
The Sully back line easily had the beating of the Machen backs.
With Richard Rego and Tom Evans back in the line there was more control and pace which has been missing in recent games.
John Waters stepped in to the fly-half position and was later replaced by Richard Phelps; both players controlled play well through Tom Curtis and Tom Evans in the centre.
Gavin Walters and Mark Rossa had great games with both ensuring quick ball for the backs and forwards.
Sully scored four tries through Keith Williams, Mike Rabaiotti, Tom Evans and Richard Rego, who incidentally kicked all four conversions successfully - about time!
Sully are always looking to add strength and depth to their player base, even more so in light of recent injuries.
If anybody is interested in playing rugby for Sully RFC, please feel free to attend one of the training sessions at Burnham Avenue in Sully. Training takes place on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7pm.

*Congratulations to new player Simon Dorken, who proposed to his girlfriend Rachel last weekend. She said yes, so well done from everyone at Sully RFC.
