Vale success at Cardiff & the Vale of Glamorgan Schools middle (u17) track & field championships

A sprint double and a new 200 metres championship best for Tom Williams (Stanwell). Pictures: Ian Dixon
TWO Vale pupils added their names to the list of Championship Best Performers when they competed at the Cardiff & the Vale of Glamorgan Schools middle (u17) track & field championships for pupils in years 10 and 11 at Cardiff International Sports Stadium.
For a May fixture, the weather was more like mid-winter – cold and damp – with the only saving grace being the unusual direction of the wind (from the start end), aiding the sprinters rather than the more normal headwind.
In the third track event of the afternoon Tom Williams (Stanwell), the 2011 Welsh Schools 100 metres champion, showed his good form in a 200 metres heat, storming around the track to register, with the help of a 3.7 metres per second following wind, an electronic time of 22.60 seconds – on the first occasion that photofinish has been used at this fixture.
That clipped 0.3 of a second off the previous mark set by Sion Edwards (YG Glantaf) in 1989. Tom was slower in the final, which he also won.
In the second half of the meeting, he completed a sprint double by winning the 100 metres but he was pushed very hard in that event by his Barry & Vale Harriers team-mate Matthew Collins (Barry Comprehensive) – encouraging form from two pupils who were due to compete the following week for Welsh Schools at the Sainsbury’s School Games 2012 at the Olympic Stadium in London.
The second championship best came close to the end of the afternoon. Tillie Carter (Bryn Hafren) had won the u15 1500 metres walk in 2011. Now in year 10, she competed over 2000 metres in the walk for the first time and clocked a very encouraging 12 minutes 50.49, to hack over 17 seconds off the 1999 time of 13:07.7, which was set by Lisa Munn (St Cyres).
In addition to Tom Williams, four more Vale pupils – two boys and two girls - enjoyed double success by winning two titles. Stanwell year 11 Matteo Holmes has been a regular throws winner at Cardiff & the Vale Schools championships since 2010. He might well have been hoping for a repeat of the three titles in the long throws that he notched up in year 9 but, with the javelin not going so well this summer so far, he had to settle for retaining his hammer crown (43.20) and taking the discus title (34.56).
Talented sprinter/jumper George Griffiths, having won the u15 100, 80 hurdles and long jump last summer, confined his activities to three field events ahead of his relay appearance for Welsh Schools at the School Games 2012. He chalked up wins in the long jump (6.01) and triple jump (12.03) but, like Matteo Holmes, had to settle for second spot in his third event, the shot.
Experienced high jumper/pentathlete Annabel Curle can feel pleased with her double. The Cowbridge year 10 took the high jump with an encouraging 1.55 metres leap and won heat and final to claim the 80 metres hurdles.
The fourth ‘double winner’ was St Richard Gwyn year 10 Emily Gillard, who won the discus (18.73) and javelin (30.29) at her first attempt.
Six other Vale pupils gained an individual title.
Matthew Collins won the 400 metres comfortably in 52.52 seconds, a time which suggests that he can break the 50 seconds mark later in the season.
Bro Morgannwg pupils won the pole vault and 3000 metres, George Connelly taking the vault with a clearance at 3.10 metres and Dafydd George claiming a debut win over 3000 metres (9:58.64).
The Cowbridge duo of Joe Gaughan and Jessica Jaques also made their mark. Joe claimed top spot in the shot with a best put of 12.17 metres while year 11 Jessica Jaques won the 3000 metres (11:42.98).
Last year, Ellie Atkinson (Llantwit) was only third in the u15 final in a time of 5:36.95. After her wonderful second half to the winter on the country and road, that time was always in danger of major revision this summer – and so it proved. She hacked nearly 40 seconds off that time in winning in 4:57.82, and, in more favourable conditions, she will take her best down towards the 4:30 mark.
There was also a Vale win in the girls’ relay, the Stanwell team taking the title in 57.17 seconds In the team competitions, there was joy for the Cowbridge girls – their points total of 289 was enough to see off the challenge of Cardiff High (281) and Bro Morgannwg (188.5) – but disappointment for Bro Morgannwg (289) and Cowbridge (242) in the boys’ competition in which Cardiff High racked up 408 points to retain the title.
The winners from this meeting will receive their award at the Cardiff & the Vale of Glamorgan Schools Track & Field presentation evening, which is pencilled in for Cowbridge Comprehensive on Tuesday, September 11, starting at 7pm.
The top performers from these championships are likely to be included in the district to compete at the Aviva Welsh Schools National championships, to be held at Penlan, Brecon, on Saturday, July 7, and, following that fixture, Welsh Schools will select a middle team to compete at the SIAB Schools u17 international, which will be hosted by English Schools at Ashford in Kent on Saturday, July 21.
