Penarth Town B beat Inter Penarth B in first derby of season
8:30am Thursday 30th August 2012 in Sport
INTER PENARTH B 3 PENARTH TOWN B 9
WITH THE old rivals both having new-look teams this year and the result being anybody's guess, Penarth Town Seconds were away to Inter in the eagerly-awaited local derby in the Vale Senior Soccer League Second Division last Saturday.
Inter started the better-looking team and, applying some early pressure, took the lead after 15 minutes. Stepping up a gear, Town started to dominate the central midfield through Ryan Willams and Luke Horwood, with support on the flanks from Liam Parker and Jack Stansfield.
This, in turn, provided an excellent service for Martyn Boulton and Joe Janes up front. Inter didn't really do themselves any favours when they went down to 10 men as a player was sent off for dissent.
It was not long before Town started to make full use of the extra man and the quality service, with Janes setting up Boulton no less than four times and Boulton returning the favour to allow Janes to score one of his own. During this half-hour spell, Town completely dominated the game, which was reflected in the 5-1 half-time scoreline.
After the break Town continued the pressure and soon added a further two goals, another for Janes and one from Jez Millard pushing forward. The Town back line, especially Callum Reynolds and James Williams, looked solid after the early goal from Inter but a minor lapse in concentration allowed the home side to pull one back to make it 7-2.
Shortly after it seemed they might make a bit of a comeback when they were awarded a penalty but it was fired high over the bar and that really signalled the end for them.
Town introduced some fresh legs through Nathan Evans and Ross Dennison which just made things harder for Inter. They were tiring noticeably now and this allowed Boulton to add another - his fifth - with an individual effort from a tight angle.
Liam Parker, after being provider most of the game, chipped in with a goal of his own to take the Town total to nine. Inter scored another consolation in the dying seconds. Another fine performance from all Penarth Town players and a thoroughly deserved and significant win.
Man of the match: Callum Reynolds. Town line-up: Gareth Hegarty, Matteus Grant, James Williams, Callum Reynolds, Jez Millard, Jack Stansfield, Liam Parker, Luke Horwood, Ryan Williams, Martyn Boulton and Joe Janes. Subs Nathan Evans, Ross Dennison and Rhys Owen.
Town play their next game on Saturday, September 1, at home against Pro Copy.
