Victory brings first points of season for Inter Penarth

INTER PENARTH A 1 CADDY IMPS 0
AFTER a lacklustre start to the season with two losses, during which two 20-minute spells proved costly for newly promoted Inter, they were keen to gain their first points.
Due to work commitments the Green Army turned out with a bare 11, but looked strong from the off and with Ginger restored to 1st team, the opposition were never likely to get much time on the ball.
What little they saw was restricted by the fact that Inter were at last defending from the front, with Lewis not allowing the back four from Barry to settle. The whole team played higher up the park, making it difficult for the visitors to find their way out of their half. Anything that did come their way was well dealt with by the Inter back four of Wesley, Kieran, Ryan and Corey.
The back line were more composed, allowing Damo, Ginger and little Johnny in midfield to dominate with their passing and movement, and Bousy and Nathan on the flanks could get up and support Lewis.
However, despite controlling possession and territory, chances were being squandered and it seemed this might be another wasted opportunity, against a limited but organised Imps outfit.
At last a sustained period of Inter pressure forced a number of corners which were eventually capitalised on when Corey popped down the left, beat his man to the clearance and swung in an ideal cross to Ginger on the back post who nodded home.
A slender 1-0 lead was all the home team took into the break.
Caddy took more encouragement from this scoreline than Inter, but the home team were determined to maintain their lead and not let this opportunity go.
It was the Barry outfit that carved out the next real chance, but along with a shot they mustered shortly afterwards, these were the only real sights of goal they managed.
It wasn’t to be for Caddy as Inter’s back four gave them no more chances and the home midfield got back into their rhythm.
With no players on the bench and the opposition doing their utmost to get back into the game, the hosts stuck to the programme, fully committed in the tackle and showing that when you all play for each other, you don’t have to be at your best to get results - and Inter were by no means at their best.
They were playing some good stuff though, and after a great passage of play down to the right, Nathan found himself with space to shoot, only to see his effort sail over. This was followed by an attempt more suited to the 15 a-side game, this time by Ryan who had been playing a blinder at the back.
Good passing from Ginger and little Johnny saw Damo next to try his luck, his effort going the same way as the others, meaning despite Inter's superiority, the Imps were still in the game.
Good interchanging between Bousy and Lewis released the former who let loose with a rocket headed for the net, only for the visitors' keeper to pull off a miraculous flying save.
Unfortunately for the Imps, their efforts petered out and the final whistle brought Inter their first points of the season.
With all 11 players doing well while not really hitting top gear, man of the match went to Corey, who was not only resolute in defence but set up the winning goal and was a constant threat down the left.
Team: Iddy, Wesley, Kieran, Ryan, Corey, Ginger, Damo, Little Johnny, Bousy, Nathan, and Lewis.
Thanks to the Top House for their continued support.
