Dinas fire seven past Corries

DINAS POWYS FC 7 CARDIFF CORINTHIANS 1
by Peter King, Dinas Powys FC
BEFORE this Welsh League Division 2 game could start on Saturday (September 1), the Dinas committee members once again had the irksome job of removing several piles of dog mess from the pitch, a trend which seems to be getting worse by thoughtless dog owners.
Dinas started the game in the ascendancy with Steffan Davies finding strike partner Mark Dunford with a header, Dunford playing the ball out wide to Robbie Fowler whose low cross was gathered by Josh Payne at his near post. The two Dinas full backs Mike Lewis and Steve Provis began threading balls down the flanks to wide men Liam Jeremy and Robbie Fowler with comparative ease, and this was to prove a successful ploy as a continuous stream of crosses came in which the Corries defence found difficult to deal with.
Fowler missed a good chance to open the scoring when well placed but he misjudged his header from Jeremy's cross and the chance went missing.
The hosts finally got the breakthrough on 16 minutes, Steffan Davies finding Richard Yarr in space for an easy side-foot goal from six yards. Unfortunately Davies picked up an injury and had to be replaced by Joe Hinds. The chances were coming thick and fast with first Fowler bringing a good save from Payne, tipping the ball over the bar, and then Hinds hitting the post with a header from a corner from the right.
The Corries cause wasn't helped at all when one of their players had to leave the field with a dislocated shoulder and as they only had a bare 11 players, had to face the prospect of playing out the rest of the game with only 10 men. However, on 40 minutes, a cross came in from the left and Hamca Baraneta reacted quicker than the Dinas defence to grab a shock equaliser from close range.
This shocked Dinas into action and, just a minute from half time, Fowler made it 2-1 hooking the ball past Payne from a Mike Lewis cross.
The second half was totally dominated by Dinas and after Yarr and Lewis combined well, Dunford met the cross with a firm header that Payne got a hand to but the referee judged the ball had already crossed the line for 3-1.
Seventeen minutes in and Hinds made it 4-1 with a header, this time from a cross by Chris Hinam. Just seven minutes later Hinds netted again, slotting home an excellent cross from Fowler for 5-1 and just a minute later Richard Yarr picked the ball up on the edge of the area to drive home an unstoppable shot for 6-1.
Dinas then rang the changes, bringing on Adrian Harvie for Yarr and James Williams for Fowler, but the pressure was maintained as the Corries goal was peppered with crosses from both wings and it began to look as if Dinas might make double figures for the second week running.
But somehow the Corries managed to contain Dinas to just one further goal, Hinds bagging his hat-trick with five minutes remaining from a Dunford cross from the left for a final 7-1 scoreline.
Sterner tests lie ahead for Dinas however, starting next Saturday (September 8), when they travel to Penrhiwceiber for a Welsh Cup 2nd Qualifying Round encounter with a 2.30pm kick off.
